a note from the studio

A volcanic island in Vanuatu's southern province of Tafea, in the South Pacific. The mountain at its centre, Mount Yasur, has been erupting continuously for centuries, one of the most accessible active volcanoes on earth. Around its base the kastom villages keep older Pacific traditions, and on the east coast a small movement still waits for John Frum. from the studio

Tanna, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Tanna

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Tanna is an island about 40 km north-to-south in Tafea Province, the southernmost province of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific. The land is volcanic and fertile, with rainforest, black-ash beaches, and coffee plantations on the high inland plateau. The main settlement, Lenakel, sits on the west coast; the island's population is around 30,000, the great majority living in kastom villages that maintain pre-colonial Melanesian custom. Port Vila on Efate, the national capital, lies about 200 km to the north.

the air

Mount Yasur, on the east of the island, rises to about 361 m and has been in near-continuous eruption since Captain Cook recorded its glow in 1774. The crater is one of the most accessible active volcanoes anywhere: a graded road and a short walk bring visitors to the rim, where Strombolian bursts throw lava bombs above the lip every few minutes. Activity is rated daily by the Vanuatu Geohazards Observatory; the volcano is closed at the higher alert levels. The black ash plain at its foot is a recognised sacred site.

the visit

Most visitors arrive by light aircraft from Port Vila to Whitegrass Airport on the island's west side; the flight is under an hour. From there, four-wheel-drive transfers cross the island to Yasur. Lodges and bungalows operate on both coasts, many run by the kastom villages themselves. The volcano is best at dusk, when the lava reads strongest against the dark sky. Tropical clothing, sturdy shoes, and a torch are the usual call. Village protocol asks visitors to follow the assigned local guides.

A few questions we get about Tanna — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

An active stratovolcano on the east of Tanna, rising to about 361 m. It has been in near-continuous eruption since 1774, when Captain Cook first recorded its glow, and is one of the most accessible active volcanoes on earth.

In Tafea Province, the southernmost province of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific. The island lies about 200 km south of Port Vila on Efate, and is reached by a short flight to Whitegrass Airport on the west coast.

Villages on Tanna that maintain pre-colonial Melanesian custom: traditional dress, ceremonial dance, the kava cycle, and the authority of chiefs. Most of the island's population lives in kastom communities outside the main town of Lenakel.

The figure at the centre of a cargo-cult movement that emerged on Tanna in the late 1930s. Followers on the east coast still gather each year on 15 February, raising an American flag and waiting for John Frum's return.

The Vanuatu Geohazards Observatory rates Yasur's activity on a five-level scale. At lower levels visitors walk the rim with a guide; at higher levels the volcano is closed. Check the current rating before booking.

about the piece in your home

Yes. Tanna is one of the recognised landscapes of Melanesia, and Yasur is known across the Pacific. A Small or Medium with a handwritten studio note carries the place well to anyone who has lived or travelled there.

The black ash, ember red, and ocean blues suit Coastal-modern, Tropical-modern, and Dark Maximalist rooms. The piece anchors a wall with charcoal or driftwood tones, and reads strongly against plain white.

A single Large is the usual call above a sofa; a 4-tile Mural carries a longer wall; a 9-tile Mural takes the whole space. For a smaller console or shelf, a Medium on a stand holds the eye.

Yes, in the Dura Satin or Matte finish, both scratch-resistant and steam-tolerant. The Glossy finish is for framed wall pieces away from direct moisture.

A soft microfibre cloth and water. No abrasives, no ammonia-based sprays. The colour is infused into the ceramic surface and does not lift with normal household cleaning.
