Teton Park Road with the Cathedral Group

— the road that runs along the front of the range.

Where it lives

Not only on a wall.

A small tile on the nightstand catching the morning. A larger one above the fire. Yours, wherever you spend the slow hours.
On the nightstand, a 6-inch on a walnut stand
Among the books, a 6-inch leaning into the spines
Beside the kettle, a 12-inch propped
Down a quiet hall, an 18-inch floating off the wall
Above the fire, the 24-inch in a walnut surround
a note from the studio

The Teton Park Road runs north from Moose along the east side of the range, closer to the peaks than the highway across the valley. North of Cottonwood Creek the Cathedral Group fills the windshield — Teewinot, Mount Owen, and the Grand standing in a line. Sagebrush flat, lodgepole margin, the Snake River out of sight to the east, and a wall of rock to the west. from the studio

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Teton Park Road with the Cathedral Group

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

The Teton Park Road runs about 20 miles between Moose and Jackson Lake Junction inside Grand Teton National Park. It is the inner of the two parallel roads up the valley, the outer being US 26/89/191. The Cathedral Group is the cluster of summits at the centre of the range: the Grand Teton at 13,775 feet, Mount Owen at 12,933 feet, and Teewinot at 12,330 feet, with Mount Teewinot and Nez Perce Peak flanking the south. The grouping was named for its resemblance to a cathedral facade.

the light

The peaks face roughly east, so the Cathedral Group catches first light around sunrise from June through August. Pull-offs at the Glacier View Turnout and the Cathedral Group Turnout face the wall directly. In late September the cottonwoods along the Snake River turn yellow against the dark range. Afternoon light flattens the wall; the strongest hours are the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset, when shadow falls across the canyons that divide the peaks.

the visit

Most of the Teton Park Road is open from about May 1 through October 31, depending on snow. A long section between Taggart Lake trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge is closed to motor vehicles from November through April and used by skiers and cyclists. The Cathedral Group Turnout sits about 8 miles north of Moose, with interpretive signs naming each summit. Park entry requires a fee or pass. Wildlife jams for moose, bison, and bear are common; pull fully off the road before stopping.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Teton Park Road with the Cathedral Group — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

The central cluster of peaks in the Teton Range: the Grand Teton at 13,775 feet, Mount Owen at 12,933 feet, and Teewinot at 12,330 feet. The name reflects the cathedral-like profile of the three peaks together.

The Cathedral Group Turnout, about eight miles north of Moose, faces the wall directly with interpretive panels naming each summit. The Glacier View Turnout a little further north is also a common stop.

About 20 miles between the Moose entrance and Jackson Lake Junction. It runs parallel to and west of the main highway, closer to the peaks and through sage flats and lodgepole pine.

No. A long inner section closes to motor vehicles from November through April, when it is used by skiers, snowshoers, and winter cyclists. The ends near Moose and Jackson Lake Junction remain open.

Congress established the original park in 1929; an enlarged park combining it with the Jackson Hole National Monument was created in 1950. The park now protects most of the range and a large stretch of the valley.

The Teton Fault on the east side of the range has been uplifting the mountains and dropping the valley for several million years. The vertical relief from valley floor to summit is about 7,000 feet.

about the piece in your home

Yes. The Cathedral Group view from the inner road is one of the recognisable images of the park. A Medium or Large with a handwritten note from the studio is the common gift size.

The piece reads well in mountain-modern, alpine-modern, and warm minimalist rooms. The dark rock and pale sage palette holds against wood, stone, and natural wool.

Yes. Teton imagery has staying power in alpine-modern and lodge-revival rooms. The view is recognisable but specific enough to read as a real place.

Above a sofa, a single Large or a four-tile Mural reading horizontally. Above a console, a Medium centred, or three Smalls in a row.

Yes. Order in Dura Satin for a soft sheen and scratch resistance, or Matte for no sheen. Both handle steam and routine wiping.

A dry or barely-damp microfibre cloth handles dust and fingerprints. The colour is infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure and lives beneath a thin glossy finish.

Yes. The piece is original to Wender Studios, painted by Reid Wender. We do not license other artists' work, and no two vistas leave the studio identical.
