a note from the studio

The Whiskey Mountain herd winters on the slopes above Dubois, on the east edge of the Wind River Range. Rams gather low, where the wind scours the grass clear, and ewes hold the higher benches. The animals are visible from the Whiskey Basin road most mornings between November and April. Nobody crowds them. People pull off, set down a thermos, and wait for the herd to move. from the studio

about Bighorn sheep in the Wind Rivers

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

The Wind River Range runs about 100 miles along the Continental Divide in west-central Wyoming, holding Gannett Peak at 13,810 feet and seven of the state's tallest summits. The Whiskey Basin Wildlife Habitat Area, southeast of Dubois in Fremont County, was set aside in the 1940s and now anchors the winter range of the Whiskey Mountain bighorn herd, one of the largest wintering populations in North America. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department co-manages the basin with the Bureau of Land Management and the Shoshone National Forest.

the season

Bighorns drop to the winter range in late October and stay through April, when ewes climb back to lambing cliffs. The rut peaks in November and December, the season when rams clash and the sound of horns carries a quarter mile across the basin. The National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center in Dubois opens year-round and runs guided herd tours from November through March. Lambs are usually first visible from late May, picking along the south-facing scree above Torrey Creek.

the silence

The basin sits at the head of a long valley, and the wind off the Absarokas keeps the snow thin on the south slopes, which is why the herd can winter here at all. Coyotes work the edges. Golden eagles pass overhead through the cold months. The road from Dubois to Trail Lake climbs about six miles of gravel and ends at a trailhead used mostly by climbers headed for Whiskey Mountain in summer. In winter the parking lot stays empty and the herd moves on its own clock.

about the place

The Whiskey Mountain herd winters in Whiskey Basin, southeast of Dubois in Fremont County. The basin is managed jointly by Wyoming Game and Fish, the BLM, and the Shoshone National Forest.

From early November through April, on south-facing slopes above the Trail Lake road. Rams are easiest to find during the November and December rut, when groups gather low on the basin.

It is one of the largest wintering bighorn herds in North America. Counts vary year to year with disease pressure, but the basin reliably holds many hundreds of animals through the cold months.

The National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center sits on the highway through Dubois. It runs herd tours from November through March and keeps regular hours the rest of the year.

No. Bighorn sheep are wild sheep native to North America with curled horns. Mountain goats are a different species with straight black horns and live further north and west in the Rockies.

Coyotes work the edges and take lambs in spring. Golden eagles pass through in winter. Mountain lions occupy the ridges above the basin but are rarely seen by visitors.

about the piece in your home

It has carried well for outfitters and clients from the Dubois and Pinedale ranges. The Whiskey Mountain herd is a touchstone for anyone who has drawn a sheep tag. A Medium or Large with a handwritten note travels well.

Mountain-modern interiors, lodge rooms, and warm Western studies. The bone, rust, and slate tones in the artwork sit comfortably with leather, oiled walnut, and woven wool.

Yes. Alpine-modern leans on natural texture and restrained colour. The tile reads as a quiet focal point against plaster, stone, or warm timber paneling without crowding the room.

A single Large reads well above a console or narrow sofa. For a full sofa wall, a 4-tile or 9-tile Mural carries the proportion better and lets the horn line breathe.

Yes, in the Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both resist scratching and handle the humidity of a Western mudroom or bath. The colour lives in the surface and will not fade.

Microfibre and water. Nothing else is needed. The pigment is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, beneath a thin glossy finish.

Yes. Wender Studios is a single family studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. The work is hand-finished in-house and not licensed from any outside artist or stock library.
