a note from the studio

The Westport waterfront on the south side of Grays Harbor, with the charter and commercial fleet rafted along Float 6 and the marina jetty running out toward the harbour entrance. Boats come in heavy through the fall salmon and tuna runs, gulls work the cleaning tables, and the docks stay busy from before light until the morning fog lifts. The Westport-South Beach maritime museum sits a few blocks back from the water. This is one of the last working fishing towns on the outer Washington coast. from the studio

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Westport waterfront and fishing fleet

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Westport is a small coastal city of about 2,200 year-round residents in Grays Harbor County, Washington, occupying the tip of a sandy peninsula on the south side of the entrance to Grays Harbor. The Westport Marina is operated by the Port of Grays Harbor and is the largest coastal marina between San Francisco and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, with more than 600 commercial and recreational slips. The town markets itself as the salmon capital of Washington and is also a major Dungeness crab and albacore tuna port. State Route 105 runs in from the south through Twin Harbors.

the water

Grays Harbor is a large shallow estuary at the mouth of the Chehalis River, draining about 2,500 square miles of southwest Washington into the Pacific. The harbour entrance is marked by twin jetties; the south jetty runs nearly two miles from the Westport shore and shelters the marina from the prevailing northwest swell. Commercial and charter crews chase coho and Chinook salmon from June through September, albacore tuna in late summer, and Dungeness crab through the cooler months. The Coast Guard maintains a station at the marina because the bar crossing can run dangerous when wind opposes tide.

the visit

The marina sits at the north end of town, with the observation tower at the end of Float 20 giving the easiest panoramic view of the working fleet and the harbour mouth. Charter offices line Westhaven Drive; the salmon and tuna seasons are the busiest. The Westport Maritime Museum, in the 1939 former Coast Guard station a few blocks back from the water, displays the original Grays Harbor lighthouse lens and is open most afternoons in season. Paid parking applies along the dock; the boardwalk north to Westhaven State Park is a fifteen-minute walk.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Westport waterfront and fishing fleet — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

A major Pacific coast port for salmon, albacore tuna, and Dungeness crab. The town markets itself as the salmon capital of Washington and is home to a sizeable commercial and charter fleet on Grays Harbor.

It is the largest coastal marina between San Francisco and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, with more than 600 slips for commercial and recreational vessels. It is operated by the Port of Grays Harbor.

On a sandy peninsula at the south side of the entrance to Grays Harbor, about two hours southwest of Olympia by way of US 12 and State Route 105 through Grays Harbor County.

Coho and Chinook salmon from June through September, albacore tuna in late summer, and Dungeness crab through the cooler months. Seasons follow Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife rules each year.

Because the Grays Harbor bar crossing can run dangerous when an ebb tide meets a westerly swell. The station has guarded the entrance and supported the fleet since the early twentieth century.

The observation tower at the end of Float 20 gives the easiest panoramic view of the marina, the boats, and the harbour mouth. Charter offices line Westhaven Drive nearby.

about the piece in your home

It carries well for that recipient. Westport is where most outer-coast salmon and tuna trips begin. A Medium hung in a study or boathouse reads as a quiet nod to a working harbour.

The weathered wood and cool harbour light sit well with coastal-modern, working-shore, and Pacific Northwest modern rooms. It also holds against painted shiplap and brass in a more traditional cottage.

Yes. Coastal-modern leans on working waterfronts rather than tropical beach motifs. A rafted fleet under grey sky fits the register and gives a room a clear sense of place.

A single Large reads strongly above a console. Above a standard sofa a 4-tile Mural fills the wall in proportion; over a long sectional a 9-tile Mural lets the fleet line up across the wall.

Yes. Choose the Dura Satin finish for steamy bathrooms or kitchens behind a range. The colour lives in the surface and the finish is scratch-resistant. Matte is the no-sheen option.

A soft microfibre cloth and water is all it needs. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh solvents. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface and sits beneath a thin protective finish.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is created in-house by Reid Wender in our Knoxville studio. We do not license artwork from outside artists or stock libraries.
