a note from the studio

Mansfield's summit ridge runs more than a mile in profile: Forehead, Nose, Chin. The Cliff Trail leaves the Long Trail and traverses the west face below the ridgeline, ladders bolted through chimneys, ledges hung over the Champlain Valley. The Chin stands 4,395 feet, the highest point in Vermont, and a narrow band of alpine tundra holds Bigelow's sedge and arctic willow. The wind decides the day. from the studio

about Mount Mansfield summit ridge Cliff Trail

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Mount Mansfield is the highest peak in Vermont, the summit Chin reaching 4,395 feet above sea level. The mountain sits between Stowe to the east and Underhill to the west, inside the 44,000-acre Mount Mansfield State Forest. Seen in profile from the Champlain Valley the long ridgeline reads as a human face lying on its back, with named summits Forehead, Nose, Chin, and Adam's Apple running south to north. The Long Trail, the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the United States, follows the ridge for roughly 2.3 miles between Forehead and Chin.

the stone

The summit ridge is exposed Cambrian schist, polished by glaciers and broken by frost into ledges, chimneys, and clean drops on the west side. The Cliff Trail is the most technical route on the mountain. It leaves the Long Trail near the Nose, descends through bolted ladders and rock chimneys, and traverses west-facing ledges below the ridge before climbing back. About 200 acres along the ridge carry arctic-alpine tundra, a relict community of Bigelow's sedge and other species more common 800 miles north, kept on the summit by exposure and depth of frost.

the visit

The summit ridge is reached on foot from several trails, by the Mount Mansfield Toll Road from Stowe, or by the Stowe Mountain Gondola to a station near the Cliff House. The Cliff Trail is short but technical and not suitable in winter or wet conditions; the Green Mountain Club rates it among the harder traverses on the Long Trail. Walkers are asked to stay on rock and on marked tread along the alpine zone, where one footstep can undo a season of growth. The summit is in cloud or wind on most days.

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Mount Mansfield summit ridge Cliff Trail — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

The Chin, Mansfield's highest summit, stands 4,395 feet above sea level. It is the highest point in the state of Vermont and the high point of the Green Mountain range.

The Cliff Trail is a short, technical bypass off the Long Trail on Mansfield's west face. It descends ladders and chimneys and traverses ledges below the ridge between the Nose and the Chin.

From the Champlain Valley the ridgeline reads as a human face lying on its back. The named summits Forehead, Nose, Chin, and Adam's Apple run south to north along the profile, the Chin being the highest.

Yes. Roughly 200 acres along the ridge carry an arctic-alpine plant community, including Bigelow's sedge and arctic willow, kept on the summit by exposure. Walkers are asked to stay on rock and on marked tread.

On foot from trails out of Underhill and Stowe, by the Mount Mansfield Toll Road from Route 108 in Stowe, or by the Stowe Mountain Gondola to a station near the Cliff House. The Long Trail crosses the entire summit ridge.

about the piece in your home

It carries well. Mansfield is the ridge people in Stowe and Underhill grew up looking at, and Long Trail hikers know it as the high point of the state. A Small or Medium with a handwritten studio note travels gracefully.

The cool ridge blues and alpine greens sit well in mountain-modern rooms, in ski-house interiors with light pine and wool, and in quieter studies built around dark wood. The stained-glass treatment reads warm against unfinished oak and linen.

Above a standard sofa a single Large reads well, with a 4-tile Mural for a more architectural presence; a 9-tile Mural suits a long wall in a great room. Above a console a Medium is the common choice.

Yes. Order the tile in the Dura Satin or Matte finish, both rated for vertical wet installations. Glossy is reserved for framed wall art in dry rooms.

A microfibre cloth and plain water. No abrasive pads, no ammonia or solvent cleaners. The colour lives in the surface and will not fade with normal cleaning.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original to a single family studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. The visual language is our own and the work is not licensed from anyone else.
