a note from the studio

Grand Isle is the largest of the islands that make up Grand Isle County in the north end of Lake Champlain. U.S. Route 2 runs the length of the chain, a single road over short causeways linking South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero, Alburgh, and the Isle La Motte spur. The land is low and farmed, the lake is on both sides of the road for most of the drive, and the Adirondack High Peaks ride the western horizon. Most of the county's population works the land or the lake. — from the studio

about Lake Champlain Islands Grand Isle

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Grand Isle is the largest of the islands of Grand Isle County, a chain in the northern end of Lake Champlain that includes South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero, Isle La Motte, and the Alburgh peninsula. The county is roughly 195 square miles in total, of which more than half is water — the highest water-to-land ratio of any county in Vermont. U.S. Route 2 runs the spine of the chain from the Vermont mainland at Sand Bar State Park north into Alburgh and on toward the Canadian border, linking the islands by a series of short causeways.

the water

Lake Champlain wraps the islands on every side: the broader Broad Lake to the west, the Inland Sea between the islands and the Vermont mainland to the east. Water depths reach about 400 feet in the Broad Lake north of the Islands. In winter the Inland Sea freezes hard enough to support bob houses and pickup trucks; ice fishing for perch, smelt, and lake trout is part of the local year. In summer the same water carries sailing fleets out of Mallets Bay and Malletts Head.

the visit

Grand Isle is reached by car from Burlington in about thirty minutes north on U.S. Route 2, crossing the Sand Bar causeway. Grand Isle State Park sits on the eastern shore and runs a campground with lake access. Knight Point State Park and Sand Bar State Park give day-use swimming and picnicking. The Hero's Welcome general store in North Hero has anchored the chain since 1897. Foliage on the Islands runs roughly the first two weeks of October, a little later than the higher Green Mountain ridges.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Lake Champlain Islands Grand Isle — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Grand Isle sits in the northern end of Lake Champlain, north of Burlington. It is the largest of the islands of Grand Isle County and is reached by U.S. Route 2 over the Sand Bar causeway.

The chain includes South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero, Isle La Motte, and the Alburgh peninsula. All five towns make up Grand Isle County, which is roughly 195 square miles, much of it water.

U.S. Route 2 is the spine of the chain, running north from the Vermont mainland at Sand Bar State Park across short causeways to South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero, and Alburgh, on toward Canada.

Yes. Grand Isle State Park runs a campground on the eastern shore with lake access, tent and lean-to sites, and a day-use area. Knight Point and Sand Bar state parks add swimming and picnicking.

Foliage on the Lake Champlain Islands typically runs roughly the first two weeks of October, a little later than the higher Green Mountain ridges, owing to the moderating effect of the surrounding water.

about the piece in your home

Yes. A Medium or Large carries well for a Grand Isle camp, a South Hero summer house, or anyone with family ties to the chain. A Coaster Set with a handwritten note from the studio is a steady choice.

The water-greens and pale blues read in lake-house, Coastal-modern, and New England farmhouse interiors. The Voynich treatment also sits well as a single anchored piece in a Minimalist or Japandi room.

Yes. Quiet inland-water scenes on hand-finished ceramic tile are in step with current lake-house and Coastal-modern direction: warm wood, linen, and one anchored piece of colour rather than a gallery wall.

Above a standard sofa a Large reads from across the room; a 4-tile Mural fills a longer wall; a 9-tile Mural anchors a great-room. Above a console, a Medium or Large is the usual choice.

Yes. Order the Dura Satin or Matte finish for bathrooms, kitchens, and showers. The Glossy finish is intended for framed wall art in dry rooms.

A soft microfibre cloth with plain water is all that is needed. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, so it will not lift with normal cleaning.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original to the studio and not licensed from any third party. Reid Wender curates the atlas and the visual language is the studio's own.
