Tampa

Where it lives

a note from the studio

Tampa folds around the head of its bay, on Florida's gulf coast. The Hillsborough River runs through the downtown, brick streets in Ybor City still carry the Cuban and Spanish names of the old cigar makers, and Bayshore Boulevard runs four and a half miles along the water, the longest continuous sidewalk in the country. Afternoon storms come in off the gulf almost every summer day and leave the air washed clean.

about Tampa

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Tampa sits on the western coast of Florida at the head of Tampa Bay, an estuary that opens to the Gulf of Mexico through the mouth between Egmont and Mullet Keys. The city proper holds roughly 410,000 people, with about 3.2 million across the wider Tampa Bay metropolitan area, which makes it the second-largest urban region in the state after Miami. The Hillsborough River runs out of the central highlands and empties into the bay at downtown. Average elevation is only about 14 feet above sea level.

the air

Tampa's air carries the gulf in it almost year-long. Summer days run hot and saturated, with afternoon thunderstorms forming inland over the heat and drifting back toward the coast. The central Florida corridor sees more lightning strikes per square mile than anywhere else in the United States. Winter days settle into mild dry stretches with morning fog along the bay. The breeze off the water keeps the downtown a few degrees cooler than the inland suburbs, and the salt edge stays in your clothes for an hour after you leave the shore.

the visit

Ybor City, just northeast of downtown, was founded in 1885 by the Spanish-born cigar manufacturer Vicente Martínez-Ybor, who moved his operation from Key West and brought Cuban, Spanish, and Italian workers with him. The brick streets and wrought-iron balconies still carry that era; a few historic factories operate as social clubs and restaurants. Downtown, the Tampa Riverwalk runs about 2.6 miles along the Hillsborough, connecting the Tampa Museum of Art, the convention centre, and Curtis Hixon Park. Across the bay to the west, the white-sand beaches of Clearwater and St. Petersburg are about a forty-minute drive.

A few questions we get about Tampa — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

On the west coast of Florida, at the head of Tampa Bay, about 280 miles northwest of Miami and 85 miles southwest of Orlando. The bay opens to the Gulf of Mexico between Egmont and Mullet Keys.

Tampa's historic Latin quarter, founded in 1885 by the Cuban-born cigar maker Vicente Martínez-Ybor. The brick streets, wrought-iron balconies, and old cigar factories still anchor a National Historic Landmark District just northeast of downtown.

About 4.5 miles, running along the western edge of Hillsborough Bay from downtown to Gandy Boulevard. It is widely cited as the longest continuous sidewalk in the United States.

Central Florida sits at the convergence of sea breezes from both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. The collisions trigger almost daily summer thunderstorms and give the Tampa region the highest lightning density in the country.

A 2.6-mile pedestrian path along the Hillsborough River through downtown Tampa, opened in stages and completed in 2016. It connects the Tampa Museum of Art, the Straz Center, the convention centre, and several waterfront parks.

about the piece in your home

Yes. Many of our customers send the Small or Medium to family who grew up in the bay, went to school at USF, or watched the Lightning win at Amalie Arena. The Riverwalk and Bayshore are immediately recognised.

The warm-water palette sits well in Coastal-modern, Florida-vernacular, and Tropical-eclectic rooms. It also reads well against bleached wood, rattan, white linen, and the deep teal accents common in modern Florida interiors.

A single Large covers a standard console or love seat. Above a full sofa, the 4-tile Mural carries the wall, and the 9-tile Mural becomes the focal point of a larger living room or great room.

Yes. Order the Dura Satin or Matte finish for installations in bathrooms, behind a sink, or on a kitchen backsplash. Florida humidity does not affect the surface, and the colour will not fade with daily wiping.

A soft microfibre cloth and water. Nothing else is needed. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, so it does not lift or fade from regular cleaning.
