a note from the studio

Marine park on Mission Bay, opened in March of 1964 with four founders and a sea lion show. Today it sits on about 190 acres of waterfront, with killer whales, beluga, sea turtles, and a row of steel roller coasters that wasn't there a decade ago. Orca breeding ended in 2016. The view from the Skytower still carries down the bay to Point Loma and out past the kelp. — from the studio

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about SeaWorld San Diego

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

SeaWorld San Diego sits on the southern shore of Mission Bay, about ten kilometres northwest of downtown San Diego. The park opened on 21 March 1964, founded by four UCLA graduates who first imagined an underwater restaurant. The site has grown to roughly 190 acres on the bay, with exhibits, aquaria, and a small set of thrill rides. The park is operated by United Parks and Resorts, which also runs SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Antonio. It draws around four million visitors a year, the second-most-visited theme park in California after Disneyland.

the water

The park's marine collection centres on the killer whale habitat, expanded in 2017 to about 5.8 million gallons. SeaWorld announced the end of its orca breeding programme in March 2016, after sustained public pressure following the 2013 documentary Blackfish; the orcas now living at the park will be the last generation in its care. Other exhibits include beluga whales, Pacific walrus, sea turtles, leopard sharks, and a colony of California sea lions. Mission Bay outside the park is a marine reserve, and dolphins sometimes pass the breakwater near the park's south edge.

the visit

The park runs throughout the year, with extended summer hours, fireworks in summer, and a winter Christmas Celebration that adds lights along the bay. Standard admission runs higher at the gate than online; annual passes include parking and discounts at SeaWorld Orlando. The signature attractions are Emperor, a 153-foot floorless dive coaster opened in 2022, and the historic Skytower, a 320-foot observation needle dating from 1969. Parking and the main entrance face south off SeaWorld Drive. Allow a full day in summer; six hours is sufficient off-season.

about the place

SeaWorld San Diego is on the southern shore of Mission Bay, about ten kilometres northwest of downtown San Diego, in the Mission Bay Park district. The main entrance faces SeaWorld Drive.

SeaWorld San Diego opened on 21 March 1964, founded by four UCLA graduates. It was the first park in what is now the SeaWorld chain and remains the company's original location.

Yes. SeaWorld ended its orca breeding programme in March 2016 after public pressure following the documentary Blackfish. The orcas currently at the park are the last generation that will live in SeaWorld's care.

Beluga whales, Pacific walrus, California sea lions, sea turtles, leopard sharks, dolphins, penguins, and flamingos. The park also runs rescue and rehabilitation programmes for stranded marine mammals along the California coast.

Emperor, a 153-foot floorless dive coaster, opened in 2022 and is the park's signature ride. Manta, a launched family coaster, and Electric Eel, a triple-launch coaster, round out the thrill lineup.

SeaWorld San Diego draws roughly four million visitors a year, making it the second-most-visited theme park in California after Disneyland. Summer and holiday weeks are the busiest stretches.

about the piece in your home

It has been. The park is a layered memory for San Diego families and Southern California regulars. A Small or Medium with a handwritten studio note reads as recognition rather than a souvenir.

The blue and aqua palette suits coastal-modern, California-casual, and family-room interiors. It sits well beside light oak, rattan, and brushed nickel. Not the best fit for dark moody rooms.

Place-specific Southern California imagery has gained ground in coastal-modern interiors, where named local landmarks read as personal rather than generic ocean art.

A single Large handles a standard sofa or console. For a wider wall or a children's playroom statement, the four-tile or nine-tile Mural carries the bay view across the wall.

Yes, in Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both are scratch-resistant and stand up to steam and splashes. The standard Glossy finish is meant for dry, framed display.

Microfibre cloth and water. The colour lives in the ceramic surface, so it does not lift. Avoid abrasive pads and bleach-based cleaners, which can dull the surface over time.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original to our Knoxville studio, hand-finished by us, and not licensed from anywhere else. Reid Wender curates each place into the atlas.
