Salinas Valley

— the long green valley Steinbeck kept writing about.

Where it lives

Not only on a wall.

A small tile on the nightstand catching the morning. A larger one above the fire. Yours, wherever you spend the slow hours.

a note from the studio

The Salinas Valley runs about ninety miles south from Monterey Bay to the hills above Paso Robles, a long trough of dark soil between two mountain ranges. Most of the lettuce, broccoli, and strawberries on an American plate come out of this valley. Steinbeck grew up in Salinas and set most of his books in it. A working landscape rather than a scenic one — fog in the morning, fieldwork all day, and the smell of cut greens on the breeze coming off the river. from the studio

about Salinas Valley

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

The Salinas Valley is a roughly 90-mile structural valley in California's Central Coast, lying mostly in Monterey County between the Gabilan Range on the east and the Santa Lucia Range on the west. The Salinas River drains it northward into Monterey Bay near Moss Landing. U.S. Route 101 runs the length of the valley, linking Salinas, Gonzales, Soledad, Greenfield, and King City. The valley floor sits between roughly sea level and 400 feet across that span.

the place work

Cool marine air pulled inland through the gap at Monterey Bay gives the valley a long, mild growing season and the nickname Salad Bowl of the World. Monterey County reported about 4.4 billion dollars in agricultural production in 2022, led by leaf lettuces, strawberries, broccoli, and wine grapes from the Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands appellations. The Mission San Antonio de Padua, founded in 1771 in the southern valley, is the third of the California missions and still functions as a parish.

the year

John Steinbeck was born in Salinas in 1902 and set Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, and parts of The Grapes of Wrath in the valley and along its eastern hills. The National Steinbeck Center on Main Street in Salinas opened in 1998 and holds his Nobel medal and working manuscripts. The California Rodeo Salinas has run every July since 1911, one of the oldest professional rodeos in the country, and remains the city's signature week.

A few questions we get about Salinas Valley — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

The Salinas Valley is in California's Central Coast, mostly within Monterey County. It runs about 90 miles southeast from Monterey Bay between the Gabilan and Santa Lucia mountain ranges, with U.S. 101 along its length.

Cool marine air gives the valley a long mild growing season, and it produces a large share of America's leaf lettuce, broccoli, celery, and strawberries. Monterey County recorded about 4.4 billion dollars in agriculture in 2022.

Steinbeck was born in Salinas in 1902 and set Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, and parts of The Grapes of Wrath in the valley. The National Steinbeck Center on Main Street holds his Nobel medal and manuscripts.

Yes. The Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco American Viticultural Areas sit along the western and southern valley, known for cool-climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

Mediterranean. Cool foggy mornings come in off Monterey Bay much of the year, with warm dry afternoons. Rain falls mainly between November and March; summers are essentially dry.

A major professional rodeo held every July in Salinas since 1911. It is one of the oldest sanctioned rodeos in the United States and remains the city's signature annual event.

about the piece in your home

It carries well for families who grew up in Salinas, Gonzales, Soledad, or King City, and for readers who hold Steinbeck as part of their literary memory. A Small or Medium with a handwritten studio note travels well.

The valley's golden-hill and farm-green palette pairs with California Heritage, Wine-Country Modern, and warm Rustic-Modern rooms. It reads beautifully against unfinished wood, leather, and woven natural fibres.

Yes. The current California-modern direction favours specific working landscapes over generic coast imagery, and the Salinas Valley reads as a knowing literary pick. A Medium above a console is the typical placement.

Above a standard sofa a single Large or a 4-tile Mural carries the wall. Above a console or in an entryway the Medium is the right scale; a 9-tile Mural is for full feature walls.

Yes, in the Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both are scratch-resistant and handle steam and splash. The Glossy finish is for dry display walls and framed pieces.

A soft microfibre cloth and clean water. No solvents, no abrasives. The colour is infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, so it will not lift or fade with normal cleaning.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is made by Reid Wender and finished in our Knoxville studio. We do not license the artwork and we do not reprint from third-party stock.
