a note from the studio

Twenty-two acres of Art Deco between Fifth and Sixth, anchored by the limestone tower at 30 Rock. The plaza drops to a sunken rink in winter and a cafe in summer, with Prometheus gilded above it and the Norway spruce raised every December. Skaters take the ice in shifts, the brass railings catch the light, and the crowd stays late after dark.

Rockefeller Center, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Rockefeller Center

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Rockefeller Center is a twenty-two acre commercial complex in midtown Manhattan, built by the Rockefeller family between 1931 and 1939 and designed by a consortium led by Raymond Hood. Fourteen original Art Deco buildings stretch from 48th to 51st Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The centerpiece, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, rises 850 feet and houses NBC Studios. The complex was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 and remains one of the most visited sites in New York City.

the light

The sunken plaza is built for winter light. Paul Manship's gilded Prometheus, installed in 1934, faces west across the rink and catches the late afternoon sun off the limestone. From the first week of December the Norway spruce stands above it, lit with about 50,000 LED bulbs and topped by a Swarovski star. The Top of the Rock observation deck at 30 Rock opens until midnight in season, giving the only midtown view that includes the Empire State Building straight on.

the visit

The plaza and rink are open to the public year-round, with the ice rink running roughly October through April. Skating sessions are timed and ticketed through The Rink at Rockefeller Center; reservations sell out on tree-lighting weekend, traditionally the Wednesday after Thanksgiving. Top of the Rock tickets are timed-entry and book ahead for the hour around sunset. The 47th-50th Streets Rockefeller Center subway station on the B, D, F, and M lines opens directly into the concourse.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Rockefeller Center — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Construction ran from 1931 to 1939, funded by John D. Rockefeller Jr. during the Depression. The original fourteen Art Deco buildings were designed by a team led by architect Raymond Hood and given National Historic Landmark status in 1987.

30 Rock rises 850 feet across 70 floors. Top of the Rock, the observation deck on the 67th, 69th, and 70th floors, looks south to the Empire State Building and north over Central Park.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is traditionally lit on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving and stays up through early January. The Norway spruce carries about 50,000 LED lights and a Swarovski crystal star designed by Daniel Libeskind.

The Rink at Rockefeller Center typically runs from early October through mid-April. Skating sessions are timed and ticketed; the Wednesday after Thanksgiving and the two weeks around Christmas sell out earliest.

Prometheus, sculpted by Paul Manship and installed in 1934, faces west across the sunken plaza. The eighteen-foot gilt bronze figure holds the stolen fire above the rink and is one of the most photographed sculptures in New York.

The 47th-50th Streets Rockefeller Center station on the B, D, F, and M lines opens directly into the complex's concourse. The 5th Avenue station on the 7 line is one block east.

about the piece in your home

It travels well for anyone with a New York chapter. The plaza is a shared memory across generations of New Yorkers, from skating dates to office windows in 30 Rock. A Medium with a handwritten studio note carries the weight.

The Art Deco limestone and gilded Prometheus read in jewel-tone Maximalist, classic Manhattan-modern, and traditional library palettes. The piece anchors a mantel or a console wall in rooms with dark wood, brass, or deep green.

Yes. The Rockefeller tree image fits the recent return to traditional Christmas styling, alongside red velvet, brass, and tartan. Many customers buy a Small or Coaster Set in November and bring it out each December.

Above a sofa, a single Large reads from across the room; a 4-tile Mural fills a wider wall. Above a console, a Medium centered, or a 9-tile Mural for a stairwell, works best.

Yes, with Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both are scratch-resistant and handle steam and splash on backsplashes, powder rooms, and shower walls. The Glossy finish is reserved for framed wall pieces in dry rooms.

A soft microfibre cloth with plain water is enough for routine dusting. For kitchen or bathroom installations in Dura Satin or Matte, a mild dish-soap solution is safe; skip abrasive pads and ammonia cleaners.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original to the studio, painted by Reid Wender's eye and produced in our Knoxville workshop. We do not license the artwork or sell the files; the only place to buy it is here.
