a note from the studio

A 46-foot polished granite column on the bluff at Trophy Point, dedicated in 1897 to the Regular Army soldiers who fell for the Union. Stanford White designed the column. Frederick MacMonnies cast the bronze Fame at the top. From the base, the Hudson makes its sharpest bend, the same bend the Great Chain was strung across in 1778. from the studio

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about West Point Battle Monument

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

The Battle Monument stands at Trophy Point on the campus of the United States Military Academy at West Point, on a bluff above the Hudson River in Orange County, New York. The 46-foot column is one of the largest pieces of polished granite in the Western Hemisphere, quarried in Vinalhaven, Maine. It was designed by Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White, dedicated on May 31, 1897, and lists the names of 2,230 Regular Army officers and soldiers killed fighting for the Union in the Civil War.

the stone

The column is a single shaft of polished pink granite, 46 feet tall and weighing about 380 tons, one of the largest pieces of polished stone in the hemisphere. It was cut at the Bodwell Granite Company quarry on Vinalhaven Island, Maine, and barged down the coast and up the Hudson to West Point in 1894. Frederick MacMonnies cast the bronze figure of Fame at the summit. The names of the dead are inscribed on the eight bronze tablets at the base.

the visit

Trophy Point is open to the public as part of West Point's visitor program. Access is through the West Point Visitor Center on the main road in Highland Falls, with a paid guided bus tour required for entry to the academy grounds. Tours run daily and the monument is one of the standard stops. The Hudson view from the base takes in the river's sharpest bend, where the Great Chain was stretched across to block British ships in 1778. Photo ID is required for adults.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about West Point Battle Monument — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Stanford White, of McKim, Mead & White, designed the granite column. Frederick MacMonnies sculpted the bronze figure of Fame at the summit. The monument was dedicated on May 31, 1897.

It honors the 2,230 Regular Army officers and enlisted soldiers, not the volunteer regiments, killed fighting for the Union in the Civil War. Their names are inscribed on the bronze tablets at the base.

Forty-six feet, in a single polished pink granite shaft. It is one of the largest pieces of polished granite in the Western Hemisphere. The full monument with base and statue reaches about 75 feet.

The shaft was cut at the Bodwell Granite Company on Vinalhaven Island, Maine, in 1894. It was barged down the coast and up the Hudson River to West Point's North Dock.

The bluff at the north end of the West Point parade ground, named for the captured cannons displayed there from the Revolutionary War onward. The Battle Monument stands at its highest point.

about the piece in your home

A natural fit. The monument is one of the most recognized symbols of the academy. A Medium framed for a den or office, or a Coaster Set with a handwritten note, carries the place well.

The piece reads well in classic-traditional studies, military-family homes with framed commissions and unit colors, and Hudson Valley interiors. The deep stone tones hold next to leather, brass, and dark wood.

Heritage and commemorative art has steady demand inside service families and in regimental settings. The painted treatment here reads as fine art rather than memorabilia, which sets it apart from standard academy prints.

A Medium suits most desk walls. A single Large fits behind a sofa or above a fireplace. For a long study wall, a 4-tile Mural reads at the right scale.

Yes, in the Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both handle humidity. The Glossy finish is best kept to dry study and living-room walls.

Soft microfibre and water. The color is set into the ceramic surface beneath a thin protective finish, so no abrasives or solvents are needed.

Yes. Hand-finished in our Knoxville studio by Reid Wender. The Battle Monument joins our New York military and Hudson Valley pieces. No licensing in or out.
