a note from the studio

Coopers Beach is the village beach at the foot of Coopers Neck Lane in Southampton. The sand runs about five hundred feet from dune to tide and the dune line behind it is held by beach grass and a row of large summer houses. Stephen Leatherman, the coastal scientist who publishes the annual Top Ten Beaches list as Dr. Beach, has rated Coopers number one in the United States more than once. Parking is paid in season; the walk in is short. from the studio

about Southampton Coopers Beach

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Coopers Beach is a public ocean beach at the foot of Coopers Neck Lane in the Village of Southampton, on the south shore of Long Island's South Fork. The Atlantic strand here runs roughly five hundred feet from the dune line to the high-tide mark, with fine pale quartz sand. The village operates the beach with lifeguards, a concession, and restrooms in season. Dr. Beach, the coastal scientist Stephen Leatherman, ranked Coopers Beach number one in the United States in 2010 and again in 2015 on his annual Top Ten list.

the water

The Atlantic at Southampton is open ocean. Summer water temperatures climb into the low seventies Fahrenheit by August, cooler in June and September. The shore breaks with a steady longshore current that carries swimmers gently east; lifeguards post flags accordingly and ask bathers to stay between them. The sand bar holds well most summers, giving an easy second break for body-surfing. The dune line behind the beach is held by American beach grass and is fenced to keep foot traffic from cutting through.

the visit

The beach is open daily, with lifeguards roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Village parking lot at the end of Coopers Neck Lane charges a daily fee in season (about fifty dollars for non-residents in recent summers); residents and seasonal pass holders park free. The concession serves lunch and the restrooms are kept open through the season. From New York City the drive is roughly ninety miles east on the Long Island Expressway and Route 27; the Long Island Rail Road's Montauk Branch stops at Southampton village.

The coastal scientist Stephen Leatherman, known as Dr. Beach, ranked it number one in the United States on his annual Top Ten Beaches list in 2010 and again in 2015. The wide sand, dune line, and clean water carried the ranking.

The strand runs roughly five hundred feet from the dune line to the high-tide mark, with fine pale quartz sand. The dunes behind are held by American beach grass and fenced to protect the plantings.

Atlantic temperatures climb into the low seventies Fahrenheit by August, cooler in June and September. Lifeguards are typically posted from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

about the piece in your home

Yes. Coopers is the village beach most longtime Southampton families know by heart. A Small or Medium with a handwritten studio note travels well as a housewarming or summer-share gift.

The pale sand and dune-grass palette sit naturally in Coastal-modern rooms, Hampton-classic interiors, and warm Minimalist studies. The piece also reads well in a Coastal-Maximalist room with rattan and deep blues.

Yes. Coastal-modern leans on a single quiet hero image, not a wall of surf photos. A Large or 4-tile Mural of the beach becomes the room's still point without leaning theme.

Above a sofa we recommend a Large or a 4-tile Mural so the dune line carries. Above a console table a Medium works; a 9-tile Mural carries a longer beach-house wall.

Yes, in Dura Satin or Matte. Both finishes handle steam and resist scratching, which suits a poolhouse or guest bath. Glossy is best kept to dry walls.

A soft microfibre cloth with plain water is enough for dust. For a bathroom install a damp cloth with a drop of mild dish soap clears mineral haze. Avoid abrasive pads or ammonia.
