a note from the studio

Upper Falls is the first drop the Genesee makes as it enters Letchworth's gorge, a 70-foot fall directly beneath the Portage Bridge. The current railroad bridge — a stone-and-steel arch finished in 2017 — replaced the long iron trestle that stood here from 1875. From the overlook the falls and the bridge appear in one frame: water white, stone warm grey, the arch carrying the Norfolk Southern line across the canyon. Freight trains still pass several times a day. People time their photographs to the whistle. from the studio

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Letchworth Upper Falls

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Upper Falls is the uppermost of the three named waterfalls along the Genesee River inside Letchworth State Park. The river drops about 70 feet over a shelf of Devonian sandstone, marking the head of the long gorge that continues 17 miles north to Mount Morris. Directly above the falls runs the Portage Bridge, a steel arch on stone abutments completed by Norfolk Southern in 2017 to replace the iron trestle of 1875. The site is reached from the southern Portageville entrance to the park, a short drive from the village of the same name in Wyoming County.

the stone

The arch overhead carries the Norfolk Southern Southern Tier line and stands 245 feet above the river at its highest point, just shy of the original 1875 trestle it replaced. The new bridge is built of weathering steel on dressed stone piers and was opened to traffic in December 2017 after three years of construction beside the old span. The cliffs framing the falls are layered Devonian sandstone, siltstone, and shale, the same beds exposed in the gorge walls downstream past Middle Falls. The Glen Iris Inn sits a short walk north on the lawn above Middle Falls.

the visit

Upper Falls is reached from the Lower Falls / Portageville entrance off Route 436 at the southern end of the park, open year-round with a vehicle fee from May through October. The Upper Falls Overlook is a short, mostly level walk from parking and is one of the few angles in the park where falls and bridge are in the same frame. Freight trains still cross several times a day. The Gorge Trail (Trail 1) continues north from here a quarter mile to Middle Falls and then onward 7 miles along the rim. Peak fall colour usually lands the second week of October.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Letchworth Upper Falls — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Upper Falls drops about 70 feet over Devonian sandstone, the shortest of the three named waterfalls inside Letchworth State Park. It marks the southern head of the gorge as the Genesee River begins its long cut north.

The Portage Bridge, a Norfolk Southern steel arch on stone piers completed in 2017, carrying the Southern Tier rail line across the gorge about 245 feet above the river. It replaced an iron trestle of 1875.

Yes. The Portage Bridge carries active freight traffic on the Norfolk Southern Southern Tier line, with several trains passing each day. The bridge is not open to pedestrians.

Use the Portageville entrance at the south end of Letchworth State Park, off Route 436 in Wyoming County, New York. The Upper Falls Overlook is a short walk from parking.

Spring carries the strongest flow with the snowmelt in April. The second week of October usually peaks for autumn colour through the gorge. Summer evenings sit warm and quiet after the day-trippers leave.

About a quarter mile downstream along the Gorge Trail. Most visitors walk between the two overlooks in fifteen minutes. The Glen Iris Inn sits on the lawn directly above Middle Falls.

about the piece in your home

It has been for many of our customers. Letchworth, and the Portage Bridge in particular, is a memory many Rochester and Buffalo families share. A Medium with a handwritten note from the studio carries well.

The river palette and the iron-grey arch sit comfortably in Mountain-modern, traditional New England, and Industrial interiors. It also reads well in a craftsman room with warm wood and brass.

Yes. The bridge sits in the centre of the frame as architecture, not as ornament. The Large is the size that does the most work as the focal piece on a wood-panel wall.

Above a standard sofa a single Large reads as a quiet window. A 4-tile Mural opens the falls and the bridge to full width; a 9-tile Mural gives you the gorge at architectural scale.

Yes. Order the Dura Satin or Matte finish for any room with steam or splash. Both are scratch-resistant, and the colour lives in the ceramic surface, so cleaning will not lift it.

A soft microfibre cloth with plain water is all the tile needs. Skip ammonia, bleach, and abrasive pads. The thin finish keeps water off the colour underneath.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original to our studio in Knoxville. The art is curated by Reid Wender, hand-finished on ceramic in-house, and not licensed to or from any other maker.
