Lake Josephine sits at 4,886 feet in the Many Glacier valley of Glacier National Park, just west of Swiftcurrent Lake and the Many Glacier Hotel. The lake is roughly one mile long and is fed by Grinnell Creek out of Grinnell Lake and Grinnell Glacier above. It drains east into Swiftcurrent Creek. The Lewis Range frames the south and west shores, with Mount Gould rising to 9,553 feet above the water on the southern flank. The Many Glacier valley was carved by Pleistocene glaciation.
The lake is known for its early-morning reflection. From the east shore near the boat dock, the Garden Wall and Mount Gould fall into the water on calm mornings before the valley wind builds. The window is short. Wind typically picks up by mid-morning out of the west and breaks the mirror for the rest of the day. Cloudless mornings in late June, July, and early September give the longest still period. Smoke from regional wildfire can mute the light through August in dry years.
Lake Josephine is reached by a level half-mile trail from the Many Glacier Hotel area, past the head of Swiftcurrent Lake. The Glacier Park Boat Company has run wooden tour launches on Swiftcurrent and Josephine since 1945; the combined boat trip cuts about 3.4 miles off the round-trip hike to Grinnell Glacier. The Many Glacier road is typically open from late May into October. Bear activity is high in the valley, and groups of four with bear spray are the standing recommendation.
