a note from the studio

Bowman Lake holds seven miles of cold water between two ridges in the quietest corner of Glacier. The road in is washboard gravel from Polebridge, and the last six miles take an hour. Past the campground the willow flats run all the way to the inlet, and a bull moose works the shallows there at first light, head down, antlers heavy with velvet still hanging in late summer. — from the studio

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Bull moose Bowman Lake Glacier

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Bowman Lake lies in the North Fork district of Glacier National Park, seven miles long and roughly 260 feet deep, drained by Bowman Creek into the North Fork of the Flathead River. The lake sits at 4,029 feet, walled by Rainbow Peak to the south and Numa Ridge to the north. Access is from the tiny community of Polebridge, six miles of slow gravel from the rangers' kiosk to the foot of the lake. The North Fork road is closed to commercial traffic and stays unpaved on purpose.

the silence

Cell service ends a long way before Polebridge. The North Fork has no electrical grid past the Camas Road junction, and the Mercantile in Polebridge runs on propane and a generator. The slow gravel road keeps day-trippers thin, and the trail along the north shore of the lake is rarely crowded even in August. The water is loud only when the wind comes down off Numa; otherwise the only sound at dusk is the loons.

the visit

The Bowman Lake campground has 46 first-come tent sites and no hookups. The shoreline trail runs seven miles to the head of the lake; the longer Numa Lookout climb gains 2,900 feet for a fire-tower view of the whole basin. Park rules require staying at least 25 yards from moose and 100 yards from bears. The road is usually drivable from late May through October. The Polebridge Mercantile bakes huckleberry bear claws daily.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Bull moose Bowman Lake Glacier — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

In the North Fork district of Glacier National Park, in northwest Montana. It is seven miles long and accessed by gravel road from the off-grid community of Polebridge, six miles south of the lake's foot.

Yes, but slowly. The road from Polebridge is six miles of washboard gravel and typically takes around an hour. The Park Service discourages low-clearance cars and asks vehicles over 21 feet to stay out.

Bulls are most reliably seen in the willow flats near the head of the lake at first light and again at dusk, especially from late July through September while the velvet is still on the antlers.

Roughly 260 feet at its deepest, carved by glaciers during the last ice age. The water stays cold year-round and is fed largely by snowmelt off Rainbow Peak and Numa Ridge.

No. The North Fork district is off the electrical grid past Camas Road, and there is no reliable cell coverage at Polebridge or the lake. Plan to be unreachable while you are there.

A century-old log store at the edge of the park near the North Fork of the Flathead River, known for its huckleberry bear claws baked fresh daily. It is the social centre of the district.

about the piece in your home

Yes. Bowman is the quiet corner that regulars choose over Logan Pass. A Small or Medium with a handwritten note from the studio carries well for someone who returns to the North Fork.

Mountain-modern, cabin, and warm minimalist interiors. The deep blues, willow greens, and twilight neutrals sit easily next to wood, wool, and stone without crowding the room.

It fits both. The water-and-willow palette anchors a biophilic scheme, and the moose silhouette gives a cabin space a focal piece without leaning toward antler-and-plaid cliché.

Above a standard sofa, a Large reads from across the room. For a wider wall a 4-tile Mural at about thirty-two inches; a 9-tile Mural is the statement size for an open great room.

Yes, in Dura Satin or Matte. Both finishes are scratch-resistant and steam-tolerant. The Glossy finish is best kept to dry rooms with controlled light.

A soft microfibre cloth and plain water. No abrasive pads, no ammonia. The colour is set into the surface and does not lift with everyday cleaning.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is composed in-house by Reid Wender and finished by the studio. We do not license or resell other artists' work.
