about Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway is a trackless dark ride in Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. It opened on March 4, 2020, taking over the Chinese Theatre at the head of Hollywood Boulevard from the retired Great Movie Ride. The ride uses a fleet of independently steered vehicles, projected animation across LED screens, and practical scene transitions to drop riders inside a Mickey Mouse cartoon. A second installation opened at Disneyland in Anaheim on January 27, 2023, inside the rebuilt Mickey's Toontown.

the visit

The attraction sits at the back of the Chinese Theatre at the end of Hollywood Boulevard. It uses Disney's Lightning Lane single-pass system and a standby queue, with morning rope-drop and the last hour of operation typically the shortest waits. The ride runs about four and a half minutes, has no height requirement, and Rider Switch is available for parties with small children. Guests in wheelchairs can transfer or remain in their device. The Disneyland version anchors the rebuilt Mickey's Toontown behind Toontown City Hall.

the year

Hollywood Studios marks its busiest windows from late February through Easter, Memorial Day through mid-August, and Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve. The shoulder weeks of January after Marathon Weekend, the first two weeks of September, and early November bring shorter standby waits and milder Central Florida weather, often in the low eighties Fahrenheit. Runaway Railway runs from park open through park close. The Disneyland version follows Anaheim's calendar, with the heaviest crowds around Disneyland's anniversary on July 17 and the winter holiday overlay.

A few questions we get about Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

The Hollywood Studios version opened on March 4, 2020, taking over the Chinese Theatre from the Great Movie Ride. The Disneyland version followed on January 27, 2023, inside the rebuilt Mickey's Toontown.

At Walt Disney World, the ride sits inside the Chinese Theatre at the end of Hollywood Boulevard in Disney's Hollywood Studios. At Disneyland, it anchors Mickey's Toontown behind Toontown City Hall.

There is no height requirement at either park. The ride is a slow-moving trackless dark ride with no drops or inversions, designed for guests of all ages. Rider Switch is available for parties with small children.

The ride lasts about four and a half minutes from boarding to unload, with a preshow that adds another two to three minutes. Trackless vehicles separate through the show building so no two ride-throughs feel identical.

Runaway Railway replaced the Great Movie Ride, which had operated inside the Chinese Theatre since the park opened in 1989 as the Disney-MGM Studios. The theatre's facade was retained in the conversion.

about the piece in your home

It works for a Hollywood Studios fan or anyone whose favourite memory is a Mickey-and-Minnie ride day. A Small or Medium framed beside a park map or a Lightning Lane stub reads as a kept ride photo.

The cartoon palette of primary reds and yellows against the theatre's deeper tones sits with Maximalist, Jewel-tone, and playful Mid-Century interiors. It holds its own in a media room, a kid's room, or a Disney collector's wall.

Yes. Maximalist direction has moved back toward saturated colour and pop-culture iconography, and a cartoon-bright tile anchors a gallery wall alongside vintage posters, framed tickets, and other tile pieces from a Disney trip.

A single Large works above a console in a hallway or den. Above a sofa, a 4-tile Mural carries the scale. For a kid's-room feature wall or a home theatre, a 9-tile Mural reads from the doorway.

Yes. The Dura Satin or Matte finish handles a bathroom or kitchen backsplash. Both are scratch-resistant and the colour lives in the surface beneath a thin protective layer.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original work from the studio, drawn in our distinctive stained-glass and alcohol-ink visual language. There is no third-party licensing of the artwork itself; the place is the subject, the piece is ours.
