“Honolulu runs along the south shore of O'ahu under the slope of Diamond Head, the trade winds dropping over the Ko'olau range from the windward side. Waikiki is the strip the world knows, with the long curve of beach and the high-rises behind it. Inland are the older neighborhoods, the Iolani Palace, and the Chinatown markets that open at dawn. Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii and the largest city in the islands, with about 350,000 residents in the city proper and just under one million across the City and County of Honolulu, which covers all of O'ahu. The city stretches along the south shore beneath the Ko'olau range, sheltered from the prevailing north-easterly trade winds. Diamond Head, the tuff cone formed about 300,000 years ago, marks its eastern end; Pearl Harbor and Honolulu International Airport mark the west.
The trade winds define the air here. They blow from the northeast across the Ko'olau range for roughly nine months of the year, dropping their moisture on the windward side and arriving in Honolulu dry and cool. Daytime temperatures in Waikiki sit between 24°C and 30°C with little seasonal variation; the difference between the August high and the February high is under five degrees. Kona winds, blowing the other way from the southwest, bring the rare humid days and the occasional storm.
Honolulu is reached through HNL, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, on the western edge of the city. Waikiki Beach is the most visited strip, about ten kilometres east of the airport along the H-1 freeway. Iolani Palace, the only royal palace on United States soil, sits in the old downtown and was completed in 1882 for King Kalākaua. Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial are thirty minutes west. Late April through early June and September are the easiest months for weather and crowds.
