a note from the studio

A white-sand crescent on the leeward coast of Maui, in the long line of beaches that run from Polo to Keawakapu. The trade winds come down off Haleakalā and lose their force on this side of the island, so the water sits quietly most afternoons. Sea turtles surface off the lava rocks at either end. In winter humpback whales (koholā) pass through the channel toward Lanai, their spouts sometimes visible from the sand. The light goes late here. The walk between the resorts is paved and quiet.

about Wailea Beach Maui Ceramic Art Tile

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Wailea Beach is a crescent of white sand on the leeward south coast of Maui, in Maui County, Hawaii. It runs roughly a quarter mile between two black lava-rock outcrops that close off the open ocean and shelter the swimming water. The beach sits in the middle of a string of five resort beaches running from Polo to Keawakapu, connected by the paved Wailea Coastal Walk of about 1.5 miles. Two resorts back the sand directly: the Grand Wailea and the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. The leeward side of the island sees less rainfall and surf than the windward east, where the trade winds first meet the volcano of Haleakalā.

the water

The water at Wailea is calm by Hawaiian standards. The trade winds, which blow steadily from the northeast across most of the year, lose their force as they cross the 10,023-foot volcano of Haleakalā, so the south-facing leeward coast where Wailea sits is sheltered from the chop that defines the windward beaches. Hawaiian green sea turtles, the honu, feed on the rocks at either end of the beach and surface a short distance offshore. Snorkelers head to the lava points; the sand-bottomed middle is where families swim. Offshore, the partly submerged volcanic crater of Molokini, a few miles to the southwest, is one of the most visited snorkel sites in the islands.

the season

From roughly December through April, humpback whales (koholā) return to the warm waters between Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe to breed and calve. The channel directly west of Wailea is part of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, established by Congress in 1992 and visited by an estimated ten thousand whales each season. Spouts, breaches, and pectoral slaps can be seen from the sand on still mornings. The same months bring the south-coast swell into a long lull while north-shore surf builds, so the leeward beaches are at their calmest. The trades return in May, and the water clarity rises with them.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Wailea Beach Maui Ceramic Art Tile — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Wailea Beach sits on the leeward south coast of Maui, in Maui County, Hawaii, between Polo Beach to the south and Ulua Beach to the north. It is a crescent of white sand bounded by black lava points, and the Grand Wailea and Four Seasons Resort Maui both back directly onto it.

The northeast trade winds that drive surf into Maui's windward shores lose their force as they cross the 10,023-foot volcano of Haleakalā. The south-facing leeward coast where Wailea sits is sheltered, and the beach is further closed in at each end by lava-rock points that break the open swell.

Yes, from roughly December through April. The channel directly west of Wailea, between Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe, is part of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, where an estimated ten thousand koholā return each year to breed. Spouts and breaches are visible from the sand.

Hawaiian green sea turtles, called honu, feed on algae growing on the lava-rock outcrops at either end of the beach and surface a short distance offshore. They are a protected species under federal law and should be observed from at least ten feet away, both in the water and on the sand.

About a quarter mile of white sand between two lava-rock points. It is one of five crescent beaches running along the Wailea-Makena resort coastline, alongside Polo, Ulua, Mokapu, and Keawakapu, all connected by the paved 1.5-mile Wailea Coastal Walk.

No. Every beach in Hawaii is public up to the high-tide line by state law. Public access paths run between the resorts to the sand, and there are small free parking lots at Wailea and the adjacent beaches. The resorts maintain the sand but do not own it.

The leeward coast stays warm and dry most of the year. December through April brings whale season and the calmest south-shore water. May through October sees stronger trade winds and clearer snorkeling. Late afternoon is the long, slow light the south coast is known for.

about the piece in your home

Wailea sits at the centre of Maui's honeymoon coast, with the Grand Wailea and Four Seasons backing onto the sand. A Coaster or a Small tile with a handwritten note from the studio carries well as an anniversary marker. The Medium is a common choice for a wedding-gift mantelpiece.

The palette runs through soft turquoise, white sand, lava-black, and the gold of late Hawaiian light, so the tile lives easily in Coastal-modern, Japandi, and Mid-century rooms. The dark lava notes also let it anchor a more saturated jewel-tone palette without going pastel.

Yes. Coastal-modern has moved away from beige-on-beige toward layered textures and pieces that read as artwork first and beach scene second. The Wailea tile leads with the painted surface, not a photograph, which is the direction the category has been going for two seasons.

For a standard three-cushion sofa, a single Large tile (about twenty inches across) reads from across the room. Above a longer console or a king bed, a four-tile Mural in a two-by-two grid carries the wall. A nine-tile three-by-three Mural is the choice for a vacation-home great room.

Yes. The Dura Satin or Matte finishes are scratch-resistant and made for vertical wet installations such as backsplashes, shower walls, and powder rooms. The Glossy finish is recommended for framed wall art and dry display, where its mirrored depth comes through.

A soft microfibre cloth and a little water. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure and sits beneath a thin protective finish, so it will not scratch off in normal handling. No abrasive cleansers and no scouring pads.

Yes. Wender Studios is a single family studio in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the painting is original to the studio. The work is not licensed from a stock catalog and is not reproduced by any other maker. Each tile is hand-finished in-house before it ships.
