a note from the studio

A small crescent on Maui's northwest shore, set between Kapalua to the north and Ka'anapali to the south. The reef sits close in, keeping the water quiet through most of summer; in winter the north Pacific swell finds its way around the headland and the bay turns to whitewater. Green sea turtles graze the limu on the inside reef most mornings, sometimes hauling out on the sand to rest. Hawaiians call them honu. The Napili Kai has held the south end of the beach since 1962. From November through March, humpbacks pass the channel between Maui and Lana'i, sometimes close enough to hear from the sand.

Napili Bay Maui Ceramic Art Tile, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Napili Bay Maui Ceramic Art Tile

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Napili Bay sits on the northwestern shore of Maui, in Maui County, between the Kapalua and Ka'anapali resort districts. The beach is roughly a quarter mile of white sand, fronting a shallow reef-protected cove on the leeward (kona) side of the West Maui Mountains. Access is from Lower Honoapi'ilani Road, which loops off the main Honoapi'ilani Highway (HI-30); two short public-access lanes drop between the condominium resorts to the sand. The closest commercial airport is Kahului (OGG), about 35 miles east across the island. The bay falls inside the Lahaina District, the same district that lost its historic town centre to the August 2023 wildfire.

the water

The bay is reef-protected and shallow on the inside, with sandy stretches and coral fringes at both ends. The shape makes it one of the more reliable snorkeling spots on West Maui. Green sea turtles feed on the limu (marine algae) growing on the basalt at either point, often within a few feet of swimmers. Federal law and Hawai'i state rules require a 10-foot distance from the honu, which are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Summer visibility holds well; winter swells from the north can stir the sand and drop it sharply.

the season

Summer, roughly May through September, is the calm season for the bay. Mornings stay flat, afternoon breezes light, the water clear over the sand. November through March brings the north Pacific swell, which wraps around the headland and can shut the bay down for swimming days at a time. The same months are humpback whale season: thousands of North Pacific humpbacks migrate to Hawaiian waters each winter, and the Au'au Channel between Maui, Lana'i, and Moloka'i holds the densest concentration. Peak sightings run January through early March, sometimes from the sand itself.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Napili Bay Maui Ceramic Art Tile — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Napili Bay is a small crescent beach on the northwestern shore of Maui, in Maui County, Hawaii. It sits between the Kapalua resort area to the north and the Ka'anapali resort district to the south, about a 45-minute drive west from Kahului Airport.

Green sea turtles, called honu in Hawaiian, feed on the limu (marine algae) growing on the basalt rocks at both ends of the bay. The shallow, reef-protected water lets them graze close to shore, often within a few feet of swimmers. Federal law requires a 10-foot distance.

Yes. The bay is shallow and reef-protected, with coral and basalt outcrops at both points. Summer brings the clearest water and the calmest conditions; visibility drops in winter when the north Pacific swell reaches the bay. Beginners often find it more forgiving than nearby Honolua Bay.

For swimming and snorkeling, May through September. For humpback whales offshore, mid-December through March, with peak activity in January and February. Winter visitors should expect bigger surf at the bay itself and reduced underwater visibility.

Yes, during humpback season. Thousands of North Pacific humpbacks migrate to Hawaiian waters each winter, and the Au'au Channel between Maui, Lana'i, and Moloka'i holds the densest concentration in the islands. Breaches and spouts are often visible from the sand between December and March.

About 10 miles south along Lower Honoapi'ilani Road and Honoapi'ilani Highway (HI-30), roughly a 20-minute drive. Lahaina's historic Front Street was destroyed in the August 2023 wildfire and is under long-term rebuilding; many West Maui businesses sit closer in, in Kahana and Honokowai.

No. The beach is open to the public, with two public access lanes running between the condominium resorts that line the bay. Parking is limited and informal along Hui Drive and Napili Place; most spots fill by mid-morning in summer.

about the piece in your home

It's been a meaningful gift for many of our customers with ties to the island. Napili Bay is a quieter, beloved stretch on the west side, recognised by locals, snorkelers, and longtime visitors. A Coaster or a Small with a handwritten note from the studio carries well.

The Voynich stained-glass palette of deep blues, reef greens, and gold detail sits well in Coastal-modern, Tropical-modern, and Jewel-tone Maximalist interiors. The piece reads especially well against pale plaster, white oak, and brass. It is not a match for very minimalist or industrial rooms.

Yes. Coastal-modern in 2026 has moved away from white-on-white toward saturated water and reef tones, with a return to handmade ceramic accents. Napili Bay's blues and greens land squarely in that shift. The Large or a 4-tile Mural anchors a room well.

For a standard 7-foot sofa or a long console, a single Large reads as a statement piece. For a wider wall, a 4-tile Mural or a 9-tile Mural scales up cleanly. The Triptych is the alternative when the wall is narrower than 32 inches but still wants three points of weight.

Yes. Order the Dura Satin or Matte finish for bathrooms, showers, and kitchen backsplashes. Both are scratch-resistant and stand up to humidity, soap, and grease. The Glossy finish is for dry-wall display only; it is not rated for wet installations.

A soft microfibre cloth and water are enough for routine cleaning. For grease or soap residue, a drop of dish soap is fine. Avoid abrasive pads, bleach, and ammonia. The colour lives in the surface, beneath a thin protective finish, so it does not fade with normal cleaning.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original to our studio, drawn by Reid Wender, the curator, and finished in our Knoxville workshop. We do not license artwork from third parties. Each tile is hand-finished by the same small team that produced the original.
