a note from the studio

A long row of coconut palms on the dry leeward side of Maui, the side where the trades drop and the air goes still. The coast here looks west across the channel toward Lāna‘i and Kaho‘olawe, so the sun goes down over open water most evenings through the year. The palms hold their fronds still long enough to silhouette. People stop talking when the sky shifts. Kalama Park empties slowly. The light leaves the way it does on every west-facing coast: quick at the end, longer than you'd think on the way down.

about Kihei Sunset Palms Maui Ceramic Art Tile

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Kihei sits on the leeward southwest coast of Maui, the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, about 14 km south of the airport at Kahului. The town runs roughly nine miles along the shore from Maalaea Bay down to Wailea, edged by a string of beach parks including Kalama, Kamaole I, II, and III, and Keawakapu. To the east, the dormant shield volcano Haleakalā rises to 10,023 feet, casting a rain shadow that gives Kihei one of the driest, sunniest microclimates in the islands. Offshore lie Lāna‘i, Kaho‘olawe, and the half-submerged crescent of Molokini. The coast is reached by Highway 31 (Piilani Highway) or the older South Kihei Road that hugs the water.

the light

The coast faces west into the ‘Au‘au Channel, so the sun sets over open water and over the silhouettes of Lāna‘i and Kaho‘olawe for almost the entire calendar year. From late March to mid-September the sun drops behind Lāna‘i, and through the winter it falls farther south, sometimes lining up behind the rim of Molokini. The leeward position of Kihei, in the rain shadow of Haleakalā, keeps the western horizon clear most evenings: the climate record for South Maui shows Kihei averaging well over 270 sunny days a year. The coconut palms along the shore stand still in the lee, which is why they silhouette so cleanly against the going light.

the visit

Public access runs the full nine miles of Kihei's shoreline. Kalama Park near central Kihei offers a long lawn under coconut palms and the easiest sunset viewing, with parking on South Kihei Road. The Kamaole Beach Parks farther south, marked I, II, and III, sit on white-sand pockets with wider west-facing views. There is no fee. The trade winds typically drop late afternoon, so the air goes still just before sunset; this is when the palms read most clearly against the sky. Late spring and summer evenings carry the longest twilight. Surf is generally calm on the leeward shore, but vog (volcanic haze) drifting from Kīlauea on Hawai‘i Island can occasionally tint the western horizon a deeper orange-pink.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Kihei Sunset Palms Maui Ceramic Art Tile — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Kihei is a coastal town on the southwest shore of Maui, in Maui County, Hawaii, about 14 km south of Kahului Airport. It runs roughly nine miles along the leeward coast between Maalaea Bay and Wailea, sheltered by the dormant volcano Haleakalā.

Kihei faces west into the ‘Au‘au Channel, so the sun sets over open water most evenings of the year. The town's leeward position in the rain shadow of Haleakalā keeps the western horizon clear, and Kihei averages over 270 sunny days a year, more than almost anywhere in the islands.

Lāna‘i sits due west, Kaho‘olawe to the southwest, and the half-submerged crescent of Molokini lies between them about three miles offshore. In winter, the sun sets farther south and sometimes lines up behind the Molokini crater rim.

Kalama Park, in central Kihei, has a long grassy lawn under coconut palms and the easiest sunset access. Kamaole Beach Parks I, II, and III, just south, sit on white-sand pockets with wider west-facing views. Keawakapu Beach, on the boundary with Wailea, is quieter.

Coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) were brought to Hawaii by the original Polynesian voyagers more than a thousand years ago and thrive in the dry, sunny climate of leeward South Maui. The trade winds drop in the lee of Haleakalā, so the fronds hold still, which is why they silhouette so cleanly against the sky.

Kihei stays accessible in every month, with the driest, calmest weather generally from April through October. December and January bring whale season: humpback whales calve in the ‘Au‘au Channel and are often visible from shore at sunset.

The leeward coast of Maui sits at the foot of Haleakalā, a dormant shield volcano that rises to 10,023 feet and last erupted within the past several centuries. The shoreline is a long alluvial apron of lava-derived sand and reef rubble, edged by fringing coral.

about the piece in your home

It's been a meaningful gift for many of our customers with ties to South Maui. For someone who honeymooned in Kihei, visits each winter, or keeps a condo on South Kihei Road, the Medium or Large reads as a quiet recognition of a place they already love. A Coaster Set works well as a smaller gesture.

The orange-and-rose sunset and the cool blue water sit best in coastal-modern, tropical-modern, and California-eclectic interiors. The art holds against white shiplap, pale oak, rattan, and natural woven fibers. In a more saturated jewel-tone room, the piece carries the wall on its own.

Coastal-modern has moved away from generic beach-house pastels toward specific places: a vista of a real coast with real geographic identity reads as more grounded. Kihei sunset art over a coastal-modern living room signals a particular place rather than a stock palette. The Large or a four-tile Mural carries best at scale.

Above a standard 84-inch sofa, the Large centers comfortably as a single tile. For more presence, a four-tile Mural fills more of the wall, and a nine-tile Mural reads as a focal piece from across the room. Above a console or entry table, a Medium sits in proportion.

Yes, in the Dura Satin or Matte finish. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, so it tolerates humidity, splash, and steam. Glossy is reserved for framed wall placements where the slight sheen reads as polish, not glare.

A soft microfiber cloth and water are enough for regular dusting. For kitchen or bathroom installations, a mild non-abrasive household cleaner works for grease or soap residue. Avoid scouring pads and bleach-based products, which can dull the surface over time.

Yes. Every Kihei Sunset Palms tile is made by Wender Studios, a family studio at the foot of the Smoky Mountains in Knoxville, Tennessee. The artwork is not licensed and is not sold by other galleries. Reid Wender, the studio's curator, chose the place for the WenderVista atlas.
