Grand Prairie

a city the prairie still shows through.

Where it lives

Not only on a wall.

A small tile on the nightstand catching the morning. A larger one above the fire. Yours, wherever you spend the slow hours.
On the nightstand, a 6-inch on a walnut stand
Among the books, a 6-inch leaning into the spines
Beside the kettle, a 12-inch propped
Down a quiet hall, an 18-inch floating off the wall
Above the fire, the 24-inch in a walnut surround
a note from the studio

A north Texas city between Dallas and Fort Worth, set on the prairie that gave it its name. The 2020 census put the population just under two hundred thousand. Lone Star Park brings the thoroughbreds in April; Joe Pool Lake holds the southern edge. Lockheed Martin's Aeronautics plant has built fighter aircraft on the same site since 1942. Asia Times Square pulls a steady weekend crowd from across the Metroplex.

Grand Prairie, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Grand Prairie

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Grand Prairie sits in north Texas, mostly in Dallas County with portions extending into Tarrant and Ellis Counties, on a stretch of the Trinity River drainage that ran open prairie until settlement began in 1863. The 2020 federal census recorded a population of about 196,100. The city is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area, the fourth-largest in the United States. Interstate 30 cuts east-west through the centre, putting downtown Dallas about twenty kilometres east and downtown Fort Worth about thirty kilometres west.

the season

North Texas runs four distinct seasons on a prairie clock. March brings bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush along the lake shore and out along the I-30 right-of-way; the Texas Department of Transportation has scattered seed along these verges for decades. Summer holds the upper nineties Fahrenheit and brings the Lone Star Park meet to full crowd. October cools quickly. Joe Pool Lake fills again with the autumn rains that follow the late-summer drought. Winters stay mild but occasionally drop into a hard freeze, as in February 2021.

the visit

Lone Star Park, on the city's western edge, runs live thoroughbred racing from April through July and again in the autumn. Joe Pool Lake, formed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1985, frames the south side and supports Loyd Park and Cedar Hill State Park. Six Flags Hurricane Harbor occupies the older park grounds on the north. Asia Times Square, opened in 2005 along Jefferson Boulevard, anchors one of the largest Asian-American retail districts in north Texas, with a weekend night market through the warmer months.

about the place

In north Texas, between Dallas and Fort Worth, mostly in Dallas County with portions in Tarrant and Ellis Counties. Interstate 30 runs east-west through the city.

The 2020 United States census recorded a population of about 196,100. The city is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area, the fourth-largest metro in the United States.

A thoroughbred racetrack on the western edge of Grand Prairie, opened in 1997. It runs a spring-summer live meet from April through July and a shorter autumn meet.

The Air Force Plant 4 facility on the north side has built military aircraft since 1942, including the B-24 Liberator, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, and currently the F-35 Lightning II.

A reservoir on Mountain and Walnut Creeks, formed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1985. It frames the southern edge of Grand Prairie and supports Cedar Hill and Loyd Parks.

For the open prairie landscape the founders encountered along the Trinity River in 1863. The town was platted along the Texas and Pacific Railway as it pushed west from Dallas.

about the piece in your home

It carries well for friends who grew up between Dallas and Fort Worth, and for the Asian-American communities along Jefferson Boulevard. The palette reads as home, not tourist.

The prairie-gold and lake-blue palette sits well with white oak, leather, and limewash. It suits Texas-modern, ranch-modern, and pared-back coastal rooms with warm wood.

Yes. The grass-and-sky composition anchors a ranch-modern or Texas-modern direction, especially in rooms that already carry leather, woven cane, and oil-rubbed bronze.

A single Large covers a standard sofa or console wall. A four-tile Mural opens the prairie at full breadth; a nine-tile Mural holds the long wall of a Texas-modern den.

Yes, in Dura Satin or Matte. Both finishes resist steam and scratching and read well as a backsplash or behind a vanity. Glossy is reserved for framed wall pieces only.

A soft microfibre cloth and warm water. The colour lives in the ceramic surface, so household humidity, direct sunlight, and ordinary cleaning will not lift the image.

Yes. Reid Wender draws every WenderVista piece in-house, and the studio produces every tile under one roof. Nothing is licensed in, and nothing is licensed out.
