Disney's Typhoon Lagoon

— a fishing village a storm rearranged.

Where it lives

Not only on a wall.

A small tile on the nightstand catching the morning. A larger one above the fire. Yours, wherever you spend the slow hours.
On the nightstand, a 6-inch on a walnut stand
Among the books, a 6-inch leaning into the spines
Beside the kettle, a 12-inch propped
Down a quiet hall, an 18-inch floating off the wall
Above the fire, the 24-inch in a walnut surround
a note from the studio

A water park at Walt Disney World built around the conceit of a tropical fishing village reshaped by a typhoon. Opened in June 1989. The shrimp boat Miss Tilly sits stranded atop the 95-foot Mount Mayday at the centre; every half hour a geyser fires from her smokestack. The surf pool throws six-foot waves on demand. Castaway Creek takes about half an hour at drift.

about Disney's Typhoon Lagoon

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Typhoon Lagoon sits at Walt Disney World near Lake Buena Vista, Florida, about 32 kilometres southwest of Orlando. The park opened on 1 June 1989 as the second of Disney's water parks at the resort and covers about 61 acres. The central peak, Mount Mayday, stands 95 feet tall, with the shrimp boat Miss Tilly impaled at the summit. Operations are seasonal; the park closes for refurbishment for several weeks each winter, alternating with the resort's other water park, Blizzard Beach.

the water

The Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool covers about 2.75 acres and once held the record for the largest inland surf pool in the world. The wave system can produce a six-foot swell roughly every 90 seconds and is also used for early-morning surfing lessons before park opening. Castaway Creek is a 2,000-foot lazy river that loops the park at a drifting pace of about half an hour per circuit. Crush 'n' Gusher uses water jets to push rafts uphill through citrus-themed flumes.

the year

Typhoon Lagoon runs on a seasonal calendar tied to Florida weather. The park is open most of the year and closes for several weeks of refurbishment, traditionally in November or January, alternating with Blizzard Beach so that one water park is always operating. Florida cold fronts can also force same-day closures when daytime highs fall below about 16 Celsius. Summer brings the longest hours and warmest water; spring and autumn carry the lightest crowds.

about the piece in your home

It often is. For Disney families who treat the resort as their place, Typhoon Lagoon carries strong childhood memory. A Small or Medium reads well as a birthday or anniversary gift, with a handwritten note from the studio.

The tropical blues, greens and warm wood palette sits naturally with Coastal-modern, Floridian and tropical-eclectic rooms. It also reads as a single bright accent in a quieter Minimalist or Mid-century space.

A single Large covers most consoles. Above a sofa, the four-tile Mural carries the colour into the room; for a wide wall in a great room or playroom, the nine-tile Mural is the size that holds the space.

Yes. Order the Dura Satin or Matte finish for any space with steam, splash or chlorine air. The colour is infused into the ceramic surface and does not fade with normal cleaning.

Microfibre cloth and water. Nothing abrasive, no harsh solvents. The thin protective finish over the colour layer wipes clean and holds up to decades of ordinary household handling.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is painted by Reid in our stained-glass and alcohol-ink visual language, then slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure in our Tennessee studio. Nothing is licensed.
