— the morning the Tree of Life catches first light.
“The largest of the Walt Disney World parks, opened on Earth Day 1998. A fourteen-story Tree of Life sits at its centre, carved with about three hundred animal forms. Trails wind through Africa and Asia, past actual gibbons and tigers, into Pandora at dusk when the floating mountains take on their bioluminescent blue. The savanna keeps quieter hours than the rest of the resort.
Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

Disney's Animal Kingdom opened on Earth Day, April 22, 1998, on roughly 580 acres of Bay Lake, Florida, making it the largest theme park at Walt Disney World Resort and one of the largest in the world. The fourteen-story Tree of Life anchors Discovery Island at its centre, its trunk carved with about three hundred animal figures. The park is organised into themed lands, including Africa, Asia, DinoLand U.S.A., and Pandora-The World of Avatar, and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
The park typically opens between 8 and 9 a.m. and closes between 7 and 9 p.m., with seasonal variation; current hours and Lightning Lane availability are published on the official Walt Disney World site. The Kilimanjaro Safaris ride through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve runs best in the cooler morning hours, when lions, giraffes, and elephants are most active. Avatar Flight of Passage in Pandora draws the longest standby waits. A valid theme park reservation is required in addition to admission on most dates.
Animal Kingdom rewards an early arrival more than any other park at the resort. Rope drop, usually thirty minutes before official opening, lets visitors reach Pandora or the safari before the Florida heat sets in and the animals retreat to shade. Photographers favour the eastern face of the Tree of Life in the first hour after sunrise, when the carved trunk picks up warm side light. The Discovery Island trails behind it are usually empty until mid-morning, when the parade routes fill in.
