a note from the studio

Seven miles north of Steamboat, up Routt County Road 36, the pavement gives out and the road climbs into the Routt National Forest. The hot springs are a series of stone-walled pools stepped down a hillside, the hottest at the top near 104°F, cooler where Hot Springs Creek runs in below. Snow comes early up here and stays late. In winter the steam rises above the pools and the road in is its own kind of weather. Locals book the night sessions a week ahead. After dark the pools are lit only by lanterns and starlight.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Strawberry Park Hot Springs Yampa Valley Ceramic Art Tile

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Strawberry Park Hot Springs sits seven miles north of Steamboat Springs, in Routt County, at the edge of the Routt National Forest. The pools are a private resort; the land around them is national forest. Elevation at the springs is about 7,800 feet. The access road, Routt County Road 36, turns to gravel and then to dirt; in winter it commonly requires 4-wheel drive and chains, and the resort runs a shuttle from downtown Steamboat for guests without the right vehicle. The Yampa River runs through Steamboat below. Up here the creek beside the pools is Hot Springs Creek, which feeds the lower terrace and runs cold beside the hot.

the water

The water emerges at the source at about 147°F and is mixed with cold creek water as it flows from one stone pool to the next. The pools step down the hillside, hottest at the top near 104°F, cooler at each terrace below, until the lowest pool meets Hot Springs Creek and is wadeable in summer. The geothermal source is part of the same regional aquifer that warms Old Town Hot Springs in Steamboat. The pinkish mineral deposits the hot water leaves on the surrounding rock are what gave Strawberry Park its name in the late 19th century. The water is high in calcium and bicarbonate and carries only a faint mineral scent.

the visit

The springs are open every day of the year. Day-use runs through the afternoon and is family-friendly with required swimwear. A separate night session runs from 10 PM to midnight, adults-only and clothing-optional, with no electric lighting at the pools after dark — only lanterns and the sky. Reservations are required and the night slots fill a week or more ahead during ski season. Cash is preferred at the gate. On-site lodging includes cabins, a converted train caboose, and covered wagons, and massage is bookable at the bathhouse. The winter shuttle from downtown Steamboat runs when the road requires chains or 4-wheel drive.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Strawberry Park Hot Springs Yampa Valley Ceramic Art Tile — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Strawberry Park Hot Springs is seven miles north of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, in Routt County. The access road, Routt County Road 36, leaves pavement after a few miles and climbs into the Routt National Forest. Elevation at the pools is about 7,800 feet.

The geothermal source emerges at about 147°F. The pools step down the hillside and cool as they flow. The top pool sits near 104°F, with each terrace below progressively cooler, until the lowest meets Hot Springs Creek. Most bathers move between pools to find their preferred temperature.

Yes, every day of the year. Winter is one of the busiest seasons. The road usually requires 4-wheel drive or chains, and a shuttle from downtown Steamboat runs through ski season for guests without the right vehicle. Snow and rising steam together are part of the winter draw.

Only at night. The day session is family-friendly and swimwear is required. The night session, from 10 PM to midnight, is clothing-optional and adults-only. Children are not permitted after dark, and reservations are required for both sessions.

The name comes from the pinkish mineral deposits the hot water leaves on the surrounding rocks, which early settlers thought looked like strawberries. The wider valley has carried the Strawberry Park name since the late 19th century, well before the springs were developed for bathing.

Steamboat Springs, seven miles south down Routt County Road 36. Steamboat sits on the Yampa River and is home to several other geothermal sites, including Old Town Hot Springs in the center of town, which is fed by the same regional aquifer.

Yes for the night session, and increasingly for day use during winter weekends. Night slots commonly fill a week or more ahead during ski season. The gate has historically preferred cash, though card payment is now available for most transactions.

about the piece in your home

Yes. It's been a meaningful gift for customers with ties to Steamboat. The springs sit seven miles up the road from town and most people who have spent a winter there know them well. A Small or Medium with a handwritten card from the studio travels well, and the Coaster Set works for a Steamboat host.

The tile sits well in mountain-modern and alpine-cabin interiors: natural wood, stone hearth, deep greens, warm whites. It also holds its own in jewel-tone maximalist rooms, where the stained-glass color treatment becomes a focal piece rather than a quiet one.

Yes. Mountain-modern interiors are leaning into hand-finished art with a specific sense of place rather than generic landscape prints. A Medium above a console or a Large above a sofa anchors a room without needing additional art alongside it.

For a standard sofa, the single Large is the right answer. For more presence, a 4-tile Mural fits an 8-foot wall confidently, and a 9-tile Mural fills a great-room hearth wall. Above a console table, the Medium reads at the right scale.

Yes. For wet or steamy rooms, order the Dura Satin or Matte finish rather than Glossy. Both are scratch-resistant and built for vertical installation in showers, backsplashes, and tub surrounds. The color is slowly infused into the ceramic surface and does not fade with moisture.

A soft microfiber cloth and water. No abrasive sponges, no glass cleaner, no bleach. For tiles installed as a backsplash or shower surround, the same routine you use for ceramic tile elsewhere in the home works here.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece originates with Reid Wender in our family studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. The art is not licensed and not available through other retailers. Each tile is hand-finished in-house before it ships.
