a note from the studio

South of Joshua Tree, west of the Salton Sea, walled in by the San Jacintos on one side and the Little San Bernardinos on the other. Palm Springs sits at the head of it. The valley has been a winter address for Hollywood, a date-palm orchard, a golf town, and a music festival's borrowed name. The light is the constant, clean and dry and very level.

Coachella Valley, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Coachella Valley

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

The Coachella Valley runs about 45 miles southeast from the San Gorgonio Pass to the northern shore of the Salton Sea, in Riverside County, California. It is bounded by the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains to the west and the Little San Bernardino Mountains to the east. Nine cities sit on the valley floor: Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, Coachella, and Desert Hot Springs. Highway 111 and Interstate 10 carry traffic east from greater Los Angeles, about two hours away.

the air

The valley floor sits below 500 feet of elevation and runs hot. Summer afternoons routinely cross 110°F; winter nights drop into the forties. Average annual rainfall is under four inches. The dryness is what brought the snowbirds and the mid-century architects: clear skies most of the year, low humidity, and the long evening light that made Palm Springs an Old Hollywood weekend address from the 1930s onward. Wind funnels through the San Gorgonio Pass and turns the wind farm visible from I-10 just west of the city.

the year

The valley's calendar runs on the cool half of the year. The BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament fills Indian Wells in March. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach take over the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio across three April weekends. Modernism Week in Palm Springs draws architecture pilgrims each February. By late May the valley empties out; by October it fills again. The date harvest runs through the fall, with the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival held each February in Indio.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Coachella Valley — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

In Riverside County, southeastern California, about two hours east of Los Angeles on Interstate 10. It runs from the San Gorgonio Pass to the Salton Sea, roughly 45 miles long.

Nine: Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, and Coachella. Palm Springs is the historic anchor; Indio is the largest by population.

November through April. Daytime temperatures sit in the seventies and eighties; evenings cool sharply. Summer is functional but brutal, with 110°F afternoons normal from June through September.

No. The festival is held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, the next city west of Coachella. The name is borrowed from the valley, not the city limits.

Dates, primarily. The Coachella Valley produces the vast majority of U.S. dates, including Medjool and Deglet Noor varieties. Citrus, table grapes, and bell peppers are also valley crops.

about the piece in your home

Yes. For a snowbird, a former resident, or someone who married into a desert-modern weekend house, a Medium reads as recognition. The Coaster Set is a good lower-cost companion gift.

Desert-modern, mid-century, and Southwestern interiors. The warm clay and turquoise palette also fits Spanish-revival and adobe rooms. It clashes with strict Scandinavian minimalism.

Yes. Desert-modern and Palm Springs revival have stayed steady on shelter-magazine pages for a decade. A Large above a low travertine console is a current-feeling pairing.

A Large suits a console. For a full sofa wall, a 4-tile or 9-tile Mural carries the proportions of the valley itself better than a single tile.

Yes, in Dura Satin or Matte. Both finishes resist scratches and humidity. Glossy is best reserved for framed wall placement away from steam.

Microfibre cloth and water. The colour is infused into the ceramic surface, so it will not wear off with normal cleaning. Avoid abrasive pads and solvents.

Yes. Created in-house in Knoxville, Tennessee, under Reid Wender's eye. There is no licensed imagery and no third-party artwork in the WenderVista line.
