Scafell Pike

— a summit cairn given as a war memorial.

Where it lives

Not only on a wall.

A small tile on the nightstand catching the morning. A larger one above the fire. Yours, wherever you spend the slow hours.
On the nightstand, a 6-inch on a walnut stand
Among the books, a 6-inch leaning into the spines
Beside the kettle, a 12-inch propped
Down a quiet hall, an 18-inch floating off the wall
Above the fire, the 24-inch in a walnut surround
a note from the studio

The high point of England, a broad rough crown of broken scree above the head of Wasdale. The summit cairn was given to the National Trust in 1919 by Lord Leconfield as a memorial to the Lakeland men lost in the Great War. The usual approach climbs from Wasdale Head past Lingmell Gill, steep and direct. On a clear day the view runs to the Isle of Man and, sometimes, the hills of Antrim across the sea.

Scafell Pike, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Scafell Pike

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Scafell Pike stands 978 metres above the western Lake District in Cumbria, England. It is the highest mountain in England and the central peak of a small massif that also includes Sca Fell and Broad Crag. The summit and roughly 1,184 hectares of surrounding fell were given to the National Trust in 1919 by Lord Leconfield as a memorial to Cumbrian men killed in the First World War, the first British mountain to be donated for public ownership. The peak sits inside the Lake District National Park, which UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2017 for its cultural landscape.

the stone

The summit is a wide field of broken Borrowdale Volcanic stone, andesite lava laid down roughly 450 million years ago and shattered by frost into the angular blocks that make the final approach slow underfoot. A drystone trig column and the round war-memorial cairn sit at the top, with smaller cairns marking the path back to Lingmell Col in poor visibility. The route from Wasdale Head climbs about 900 metres in three miles and is the most direct, though the longer approaches from Borrowdale and Eskdale carry less foot traffic.

the visit

Scafell Pike forms one leg of the National Three Peaks Challenge along with Ben Nevis and Snowdon, which brings tens of thousands of walkers to the Wasdale path each year. The National Trust ranger team has rebuilt long stretches of the line with stone pitching to limit erosion. The Wasdale Head Inn at the foot of the climb dates to the 1850s and is associated with the early years of British rock climbing. The summit holds no shelter, and Cumbrian weather closes in fast even in summer; an OS map and compass are standard kit.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Scafell Pike — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Scafell Pike rises 978 metres, or 3,209 feet, above the western Lake District. It is the highest mountain in England, though shorter than Snowdon in Wales and Ben Nevis in Scotland.

No. They are neighbouring peaks. Sca Fell sits about a kilometre southwest and reaches 964 metres. The two are separated by the rocky col of Mickledore.

Lord Leconfield gave the summit and surrounding fells to the National Trust in 1919 in memory of Cumbrian men killed in the Great War. It was the first British mountain given for public ownership.

The standard path climbs from Wasdale Head past Lingmell Gill, gaining roughly 900 metres over three miles. It is steep, well marked in clear weather, and the shortest line to the summit.

Yes. It is the English leg of the National Three Peaks alongside Ben Nevis in Scotland and Snowdon in Wales. Most teams attempt all three within 24 hours.

Late spring through early autumn carries the most stable weather, though cloud and rain are common year round. Winter ascents require ice axe, crampons, and navigation skills above the snowline.

about the piece in your home

It carries well for that. Scafell Pike is the high point of England and the heart of any Lake District walking life. A Small or Medium with a note from the studio travels easily as a gift.

The slate-grey stone palette settles into English country, Mountain-modern, and Minimalist rooms. The piece holds its own against limewashed walls, oak, and old brass.

Yes. Real-place landscape art is leading current English country and modern-rustic schemes, replacing generic moorland prints with named, mapped vistas.

Above a standard sofa, a single Large fills the wall cleanly. For more presence, a 4-tile Mural anchors the room, and a 9-tile Mural carries a tall wall.

Yes, in the Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both are scratch-resistant and stand up to steam, splash, and daily cleaning on vertical installations.

A soft microfibre cloth and warm water. The colour is infused into the ceramic surface, so it does not need polishing or sealing.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is made by Reid Wender in our Knoxville studio. No licensing, no third-party stock, no resale of someone else's image.
