The City of Westminster is one of 32 London boroughs and one of only two with city status, the other being the City of London. It covers about 21.5 square kilometres along the north bank of the River Thames, with a resident population of roughly 210,000 that swells far higher during the working day. Its boundaries run from Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens in the west across to Holborn, taking in Mayfair, Soho, Westminster proper, Pimlico, and a long stretch of the Embankment.
The Palace of Westminster, rebuilt by Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin after the fire of 1834, holds both Houses of Parliament beneath the clock tower the British call the Elizabeth Tower. Westminster Abbey, founded in 960 and rebuilt in the 13th century, has hosted every English coronation since William the Conqueror in 1066. Buckingham Palace, the sovereign's London residence since 1837, sits at the western end of The Mall behind the Victoria Memorial and the gates that face down the ceremonial route.
Westminster is reached easily by Tube, with Westminster, Victoria, Green Park, and Bond Street stations distributed across the borough. The river path runs along the Embankment from Lambeth Bridge past Westminster Bridge to Charing Cross, with long views across to the London Eye on the South Bank. The Changing of the Guard takes place at Buckingham Palace most mornings between April and July, and on alternating days the rest of the year, drawing crowds along the railings from about 10:45.
