Sheikh Zayed Mosque

— white marble that turns with the afternoon.

Where it lives

Not only on a wall.

A small tile on the nightstand catching the morning. A larger one above the fire. Yours, wherever you spend the slow hours.
On the nightstand, a 6-inch on a walnut stand
Among the books, a 6-inch leaning into the spines
Beside the kettle, a 12-inch propped
Down a quiet hall, an 18-inch floating off the wall
Above the fire, the 24-inch in a walnut surround

Sheikh Zayed Mosque, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Sheikh Zayed Mosque

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stands on the southern edge of Abu Dhabi, between the city centre and the airport, on a 22,412-square-metre footprint of white marble. Construction began in 1996 under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates' founding president, and the mosque was opened for prayer at Eid al-Adha in December 2007, three years after his death. He is buried in the courtyard. The complex includes four 107-metre minarets, eighty-two marble domes — the central dome 85 metres tall — and 1,096 exterior columns inlaid with semi-precious stone. Capacity exceeds 40,000 worshippers.

the stone

The mosque is dressed in Sivec marble from Macedonia, chosen for its pure white tone and its ability to reflect the desert afternoon light without yellowing. The 1,096 exterior columns are inlaid with floral mosaics of lapis lazuli, red agate, amethyst, abalone, and mother-of-pearl, set by Italian craftsmen over several years. The main prayer hall floor is paved in 7,119 square metres of inlaid marble. The qibla wall holds the ninety-nine names of Allah in traditional Kufic calligraphy, lit by fibre optics. The hand-knotted Iranian carpet that covers the prayer hall measures 5,627 square metres — the largest of its kind in the world.

A few questions we get about Sheikh Zayed Mosque — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Construction began in 1996 under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the UAE. The mosque opened for prayer at Eid al-Adha in December 2007, three years after his death. He is buried in the mosque's courtyard.

The complex covers a 22,412-square-metre marble footprint with capacity exceeding 40,000 worshippers across the prayer halls and courtyards. The main prayer hall holds about 7,000, with the central dome rising 85 metres above the floor.

The main prayer hall carpet is a hand-knotted Iranian piece measuring 5,627 square metres — the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world. It was designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi and woven by approximately 1,200 craftspeople over nearly two years.

The 1,096 exterior columns are clad in white Macedonian Sivec marble and inlaid with floral mosaics of lapis lazuli, red agate, amethyst, abalone, and mother-of-pearl. The inlay work was carried out largely by Italian craftsmen specialising in pietra dura.

Yes. The mosque is open to visitors of all faiths free of charge, daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., except Friday morning, which is reserved for prayer. Modest dress is required and traditional garments are provided at the entrance if needed.

About 140 kilometres south of central Dubai along the E11 (Sheikh Zayed Road), roughly a 90-minute drive in typical traffic. From Abu Dhabi International Airport the mosque is about ten minutes by car along the inland approach.

about the piece in your home

It has been a meaningful gift for many of our customers from the Gulf. The white marble light and the column inlay tones read instantly to anyone who has walked the courtyard at sunset. A Medium or Large with a handwritten note from the studio carries well.

It works best in cool-palette rooms with strong architectural light: Modern Gulf, Mediterranean Modern, and Quiet Maximalist. The white, lapis, and gold tones sit well against pale stone, walnut, and ivory linen, and anchor a large entry, dining room, or formal sitting room.

Yes. Contemporary Gulf interior design has increasingly embraced large-format art that references local architecture rather than imported European canvas. Studio-made ceramic tiles of regional landmarks are appearing across Abu Dhabi and Dubai residences over the last several seasons.

Above a standard sofa, a single Large reads well as a centred piece. For a stronger statement a 4-tile Mural fills the sofa span; over a long console, entry table, or buffet, a 9-tile Mural sets the wall.

Yes. Order the Dura Satin or Matte finish for any room with steam or splash — both are scratch-resistant and hold up over kitchen ranges, behind sinks, or in walk-in showers. The Glossy finish is for dry-wall display only.

A soft microfibre cloth and warm water. No abrasive cleaners, no scouring pads. The colour lives in the ceramic surface beneath a thin protective finish, so light dusting and the occasional damp wipe are all the piece needs.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is curated by Reid Wender and produced in our Knoxville studio. No licensed imagery, no third-party reproductions — single studio, single eye, one tile at a time.
