“The fastest roller coaster on earth, on Yas Island just off Abu Dhabi. Zero to 240 km/h in under five seconds, hydraulic launch borrowed from the catapults that lift fighter jets off a carrier. Riders wear wraparound goggles for the desert dust at speed. The track loops out over the red roof of Ferrari World and back inside.
Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

Formula Rossa is the hydraulic-launch roller coaster at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the indoor-outdoor theme park on Yas Island that opened in November 2010. It accelerates from rest to 240 km/h in 4.9 seconds and remains the fastest roller coaster in the world by top speed. The 2.2-kilometre track runs through the red lattice roof of the park, a structure spanning more than 200,000 square metres on reclaimed land east of Abu Dhabi. The park is operated by Miral; Ferrari S.p.A. licenses the brand from Maranello.
At 240 km/h the desert wind matters. A single grain of sand at that velocity acts like a small bullet, which is why every rider boards with wraparound goggles handed out at the platform. The air over Yas Island is dry nine months of the year; humidity climbs in August. Park engineers describe the launch as a hydraulic system derived in principle from the steam catapults of aircraft carriers, modified for hydraulic accumulators on land. The car never finishes a full loop. It releases its energy in a single straight charge.
Ferrari World sits on Yas Island, a 25-square-kilometre development east of Abu Dhabi proper, reached by the E12 from the city centre in about twenty-five minutes. The park opens daily, generally from 11:00 to 20:00 in cooler months. Formula Rossa requires a minimum height of 1.4 metres and a single-rider line moves faster than the main queue. Tickets can be bundled with Yas Waterworld and Warner Bros. World at reduced rates. Pocket items, phones included, are not permitted on the platform; lockers sit at the boarding gate.
