a note from the studio

The smallest of the seven emirates, set on a short stretch of Gulf coast just north of Sharjah. The Corniche runs the length of the city; behind it, in the old harbour, one of the largest traditional dhow-building yards in the world is still at work. The eighteenth-century fort that once guarded the creek now holds the Ajman Museum.

about Ajman

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Ajman is the smallest of the seven emirates that form the United Arab Emirates, covering roughly 260 square kilometres along the Persian Gulf coast. It sits between Sharjah to the south and Umm Al Quwain to the north, about thirty kilometres from Dubai. The emirate has been ruled by the Al Nuaimi family since 1820. The capital, Ajman City, holds nearly the entire population of approximately 500,000 and curves along the natural creek that has been a working harbour for centuries.

the water

The Ajman Creek shipyard is one of the largest traditional dhow-building yards in the world, in continuous operation along the inner harbour. Hulls of teak and shisham are still shaped by hand, the way they have been for two centuries, and the finished boats serve the Gulf trade between the Emirates, Iran, and East Africa. The Corniche runs alongside, with fishing skiffs landing the morning catch at the souk just inland. Across the creek, the Ajman Museum holds the old coastal fort.

the visit

Ajman City is reached in about forty-five minutes by road from Dubai International Airport, north along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. The Corniche stretches roughly four kilometres along the Gulf and is open at all hours. The Ajman Museum, in the eighteenth-century coastal fort, opens daily except Fridays for a modest fee. The cooler months from November through March bring the most pleasant weather; daytime highs from June to September regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius and the humidity along the coast is intense.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Ajman — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Ajman is the smallest of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates, on the Persian Gulf coast between Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain, about thirty kilometres north of Dubai.

The emirate covers roughly 260 square kilometres, the smallest in the UAE. Its population is approximately 500,000, almost all of whom live in Ajman City along the Gulf coast.

The Ajman Creek shipyard, on the inner harbour, is one of the largest traditional dhow-building yards in the world. Wooden trading boats are still shaped by hand for the Gulf trade.

The Ajman Museum is housed in the city's eighteenth-century coastal fort, which guarded the creek mouth for two centuries. It holds collections on pearling, dhow construction, and emirate history.

November through March brings the most pleasant weather, with daytime highs in the twenties. Summer temperatures from June to September often exceed 40 degrees Celsius along the Gulf coast.

about the piece in your home

It has been a meaningful gift for customers connected to the Northern Emirates and to the Gulf trading heritage. A Small or Medium with a handwritten studio note carries well.

The piece settles into Modern Levantine, Coastal-modern, and Jewel-tone Maximalist rooms. The Gulf blues and warm sandstones of the Voynich treatment ground it against teak, brass, or rattan.

A Large reads well above most consoles. Above a full sofa, a four-tile Mural fills the wall, and a nine-tile Mural anchors a larger majlis or living room with quiet presence.

Yes, in the Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both are scratch-resistant and tolerate Gulf-coast humidity, which makes them suitable for bathroom walls, shower surrounds, and kitchen backsplashes.

A soft microfibre cloth and warm water are all the tile needs. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface, so it will not lift or fade with ordinary cleaning.
