Uppsala

— a bell over a town that still listens.

Where it lives

Not only on a wall.

A small tile on the nightstand catching the morning. A larger one above the fire. Yours, wherever you spend the slow hours.

a note from the studio

A cathedral town on a small slow river. The twin spires of the Domkyrka over the rooftops, the university bookshops along Sysslomansgatan, Linnaeus's old garden out near the western edge. North of the centre, the three great burial mounds at Gamla Uppsala, where the kings of the old Sveas were laid before there was a Sweden. — from the studio

Uppsala, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Uppsala

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Uppsala sits 70 km north of Stockholm, on the Fyris river, the seat of Uppsala County and the fourth-largest city in Sweden with about 180,000 residents. The Uppsala Cathedral, consecrated in 1435, is the tallest church in the Nordic countries at 118.7 metres. Uppsala University, founded in 1477, is the oldest university in the Nordic region, and its old library, Carolina Rediviva, holds the Codex Argenteus.

the stone

The cathedral is built in French Gothic brick, two towers rising over the rooftops with the river running below. Inside lie King Gustav Vasa, the botanist Carl Linnaeus, and the philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg. Across the river the pink-walled Uppsala Castle, begun by Gustav Vasa in 1549, looks down from its low hill. Three kilometres north at Gamla Uppsala, the royal burial mounds rise out of the meadow, raised in the fifth and sixth centuries over the kings of the old Sveas.

the visit

Uppsala Central Station is 38 minutes from Stockholm Central on the SJ regional trains, with departures every 15 minutes through the day. The cathedral is open daily and free; the cathedral museum holds a small entrance fee. Linnaeus's garden, Linnéträdgården, on Svartbäcksgatan is laid out as he kept it in the 1740s and is open from May through September. The mounds at Gamla Uppsala are reached by city bus 2 from the centre.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Uppsala — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Uppsala University was founded in 1477, making it the oldest university in Sweden and in the Nordic countries. Its main library, Carolina Rediviva, opened in 1841 on a hill west of the cathedral.

Uppsala Cathedral stands 118.7 metres to the top of its twin spires, the tallest church in the Nordic countries. It was consecrated in 1435 and seats the Archbishop of Sweden.

King Gustav Vasa of Sweden, the botanist Carl Linnaeus, and the mystic-philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg are all buried inside Uppsala Cathedral, along with several other Swedish kings and archbishops.

Gamla Uppsala, three kilometres north of the modern centre, was the ceremonial heart of the early Swedish kingdom. Its three royal burial mounds were raised in the fifth and sixth centuries over Yngling kings.

Uppsala is 70 kilometres north of Stockholm. SJ regional trains run the route in 38 minutes from Stockholm Central, with departures every 15 minutes during the day.

Carl Linnaeus, the founder of modern botanical taxonomy, was a professor at Uppsala University from 1741. His house and garden on Svartbäcksgatan are preserved as the Linnaeus Museum.

about the piece in your home

Yes. Uppsala is the country's old religious and academic heart and a frequent reference point for Swedes abroad. A Small or Medium with a handwritten note from the studio travels well.

The cool Nordic blues and cathedral greys sit well in Scandinavian, Japandi, and quiet-academic interiors. It holds its own beside oak, linen, and unpainted brick.

Yes. The current Scandinavian direction favours a single deep-tone focal piece against pale walls and oak. The Medium in glossy reads at the right scale on a console.

A single Large works above a standard console. Above a full sofa, a 4-tile Mural reads at the right scale; a 9-tile Mural is the choice for taller walls.

Yes, in Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both are scratch-resistant and handle moisture well, which is why we use them on backsplashes and shower walls.

A microfibre cloth and water. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, beneath a thin finish, so it cleans like any tile.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original to our studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. We do not license images in or out.
