A small volcanic island rising straight out of the East Sea about 120 km off the Korean mainland. The coast road traces cliffs that drop into deep water; the centre climbs to Seonginbong at 984 m, often lost in cloud by mid-morning. The ferry from Mukho takes the better part of a day in weather and runs on a schedule the sea writes. Squid drying on lines above the harbour at Dodong. about Ulleungdo

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Ulleungdo is a volcanic island in the East Sea, roughly 120 km east of the Korean peninsula and administratively part of North Gyeongsang Province. It covers about 72.86 km² and rises to Seonginbong at 984 m, the eroded remnant of a stratovolcano last active around 5,000 years ago. The island is the closest inhabited land to the disputed Dokdo islets, which lie a further 87 km to the southeast and fall under the same Ulleung County jurisdiction.

the silence

The interior is steep enough that for most of the island's history no road connected the two main harbours; villagers walked switchbacks over the ridge. A coastal ring road was finally completed in 2018, and even now sections close in winter weather. The population sits around nine thousand, dropping in the cold months when the squid boats lay up. Inland trails through Nari Basin and up to Seonginbong run through old-growth beech and yew with very little traffic outside summer weekends.

the visit

Ferries reach Ulleungdo from Mukho, Pohang, and Hupo on the east coast; the fastest sailings take about three hours in calm conditions, longer in swell, and cancellations are common from November through March. Most visitors land at Dodong or Sadong, hire a coastal bus or boat, and spend two or three days. The hike to Seonginbong from Nari Basin takes about four hours round-trip. Squid, Ulleungdo pumpkin taffy, and the island's bottled mineral water are the local goods.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Ulleungdo — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Ulleungdo is a volcanic island in the East Sea about 120 km east of the Korean peninsula, administratively part of North Gyeongsang Province. It is the closest inhabited land to the Dokdo islets, 87 km further southeast.

Passenger ferries run from Mukho, Pohang, and Hupo on the South Korean east coast, with the fastest crossings taking about three hours in calm weather. Sailings are frequently cancelled in winter swells and during typhoon season.

Seonginbong is the highest peak on Ulleungdo at 984 m, the eroded summit of a stratovolcano last active around 5,000 years ago. A trail from Nari Basin reaches the summit in about two hours of steep hiking.

No. Ulleungdo is a 72.86 km² inhabited island; Dokdo is a pair of small rocky islets 87 km southeast. Both fall under Ulleung County administration, and Dokdo is the focus of a long-standing territorial dispute with Japan.

Squid fishing, Ulleungdo pumpkin taffy, bottled mineral water, and steep coastal scenery. The island's isolation and volcanic terrain have kept its forests and dialect notably distinct from the mainland.

Late May through early October offers the most reliable ferry service and the best hiking weather. Winter sailings are frequently cancelled, and the coastal road can close in heavy snow or wind.

about the piece in your home

It has been a meaningful gift for customers with family connections to the island and for travellers who have made the crossing. The piece reads the place specifically — cliffs, fog, harbour — rather than as a generic Korean coast.

The deep teal and stone palette settles into Japandi, Coastal-modern, and quiet Minimalist Asian interiors. It also reads well against natural wood and unbleached linen without overpowering a restrained room.

Yes. Japandi leans on muted naturals and clear sense of place, and a Korean volcanic island in deep greens and sea-blues fits that palette closely. The ceramic surface complements oak, stoneware, and natural fibre.

Above a standard sofa, a Large reads from across the room; a four-tile Mural fills the wall more fully; a nine-tile Mural becomes the room's anchor. Above a console, a Medium or Large is the usual choice.

Yes, in the Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both are scratch-resistant and handle steam and splashes well. The Glossy finish is best kept to drier wall spaces and framed pieces.

A soft microfibre cloth and warm water are enough. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, so it does not lift or fade with regular cleaning.

Yes. The image is original to Wender Studios, made in-house by curator Reid Wender. We do not license artwork in or out, and each tile is hand-finished in Knoxville, Tennessee.
