a note from the studio

The flat sandstone summit above Cape Town, rising 1,086 metres from the bowl of the city to a plateau three kilometres long. When the southeaster blows, a single cloud called the tablecloth pours over the rim and dissolves before it reaches the slopes. The mountain belongs to its own national park, holds more plant species than the British Isles, and is reached by a five-minute cableway running since 1929.

Table Mountain, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Table Mountain

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Table Mountain forms the northern end of a sandstone ridge running down the Cape Peninsula above Cape Town, South Africa. The summit plateau sits 1,086 metres above sea level, runs nearly three kilometres east to west, and is flanked by Devil's Peak, Lion's Head, and Signal Hill. It anchors Table Mountain National Park, which extends south down the peninsula to the Cape of Good Hope. The mountain was named one of the New7Wonders of Nature in 2012, alongside the Amazon and Halong Bay.

the air

The plateau and slopes hold over 2,200 plant species, more than the entire British Isles, in a vegetation type called fynbos that grows almost nowhere else on Earth. Roughly 70 percent of the Cape Floral Kingdom's species are endemic, and the mountain alone protects hundreds found nowhere else. The dassie, a small rodent-like mammal, is the most visible resident; black eagles nest on the cliffs. UNESCO inscribed the Cape Floral Region as a World Heritage Site in 2004 in recognition of this diversity.

the visit

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has run since 1929, carrying visitors from Tafelberg Road at 363 metres to the upper station at 1,067 metres in about five minutes. The current rotating cabins were installed in 1997 and carry 65 passengers each. The cableway closes in high wind, which is frequent in summer; the same southeaster brings the tablecloth cloud that drapes the summit. Walkers can take Platteklip Gorge, the most direct path up, in roughly two to three hours from the lower station.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Table Mountain — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

The summit plateau is 1,086 metres (3,563 feet) above sea level. It rises directly from the Cape Town city bowl on the north side and runs nearly three kilometres east to west along the top.

A flat sheet of cloud that forms when the southeasterly wind, locally called the Cape Doctor, lifts moist air over the summit. The cloud pours down the north face and evaporates as it descends, holding its shape for hours.

The Aerial Cableway from Tafelberg Road takes about five minutes and has run since 1929. Walkers use Platteklip Gorge, which climbs the front of the mountain in two to three hours. The cableway closes in high wind.

Table Mountain holds over 2,200 plant species, more than the British Isles, in a vegetation type called fynbos found almost nowhere else. UNESCO inscribed the Cape Floral Region as a World Heritage Site in 2004.

Yes. Table Mountain National Park, managed by SANParks, covers the mountain and runs south down the Cape Peninsula to the Cape of Good Hope, protecting about 220 square kilometres of mountain, coast, and floral habitat.

Table Mountain was named one of the New7Wonders of Nature in 2012, alongside the Amazon Rainforest, Halong Bay, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo Island, and Puerto Princesa Underground River.

about the piece in your home

Yes. It's carried well for customers born or raised in the Cape. The flat-summit silhouette reads as home for anyone who grew up beneath it. A Small or Medium with a studio note travels well.

The blue-green-and-sandstone palette suits Coastal-modern, Mediterranean-modern, and Mountain-modern interiors. It works above a console with leather and brass, or in a quieter reading room.

Yes. The Mountain-modern category has widened beyond alpine to include flat-massif silhouettes and southern-hemisphere ranges. Table Mountain's profile sits comfortably in that frame.

A Large works above a console. Above a sofa, a 4-tile Mural carries the long plateau; a 9-tile Mural fits a tall entry wall and shows the cloud and city bowl at scale.

Yes, in the Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both resist humidity and scratching on backsplashes and shower walls. The Glossy finish is for framed display.

A soft microfibre cloth with water. Skip abrasive sponges and ammonia cleaners. The colour is infused into the surface and won't fade through normal cleaning.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is painted by Reid Wender and hand-finished in our Knoxville studio. No licensing, no third-party imagery.
