a note from the studio

A five-square-kilometer island just south of the main one, joined by a causeway, a cable car, and a small monorail. The original name, Pulau Belakang Mati, was retired in 1972 when the government chose Sentosa, meaning peace. Beaches face the shipping lane to the south, and the container ships line up at anchor while families ride bicycles along the promenade. from the studio

Sentosa, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Sentosa

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Sentosa is a 500-hectare island off the southern coast of Singapore, reached by the Sentosa Gateway causeway, the Sentosa Express monorail from VivoCity, or the Singapore Cable Car from Mount Faber. Operated by the Sentosa Development Corporation under a 1972 act of Parliament, the island holds Universal Studios Singapore, Resorts World Sentosa, Fort Siloso, and three reclaimed beaches — Siloso, Palawan, and Tanjong. Its southernmost point is the closest land in Singapore to the equator.

the water

The three beaches along the south shore face the Singapore Strait, one of the busiest shipping channels in the world. From Palawan Beach a short suspension bridge crosses to a small islet marked as the southernmost point of continental Asia. The sand was imported from Indonesia and Malaysia during reclamation in the 1970s. Container ships hold at anchor in long, patient rows beyond the swim line, waiting for berths at the Port of Singapore.

the visit

Entry by car or taxi carries a small gateway toll; arrival by Sentosa Express, cable car, or the boardwalk from VivoCity is free of charge. Universal Studios Singapore and S.E.A. Aquarium operate under Resorts World, with day passes sold timed. Fort Siloso, built by the British in the 1880s to guard the western approach to the harbour, holds the original coastal guns and a wartime museum. Most attractions run from morning to evening; the beaches stay open later.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Sentosa — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Sentosa is a Malay word meaning peace or tranquility. The island was renamed in 1972 from Pulau Belakang Mati, an older name with darker connotations, after a public naming contest.

Visitors arrive by car across the Sentosa Gateway, by Sentosa Express monorail from VivoCity, by Singapore Cable Car from Mount Faber, or on foot along the Sentosa Boardwalk.

Universal Studios Singapore, S.E.A. Aquarium, Adventure Cove Waterpark, Fort Siloso, the Skyline Luge, and three beaches along the south shore — Siloso, Palawan, and Tanjong.

Fort Siloso, built by the British in the 1880s to guard the western harbour approach, holds the original coastal guns and a museum on Singapore's role in the Second World War.

Pulau Belakang Mati, a Malay name often translated as the island behind which lies death, referring to old piracy in the strait. The name was retired in 1972 by an act of Parliament.

About 500 hectares, or roughly five square kilometers. The island has been expanded by land reclamation since the 1970s, including the sand brought in to form the three south-facing beaches.

about the piece in your home

It has been a meaningful gift for customers who lived in Singapore or honeymooned at the resorts. A Coaster or Small with a handwritten note from the studio carries the island well.

The warm corals and sea greens read well with Coastal-modern, Tropical Minimalist, and Singaporean Peranakan-influenced rooms. The piece sits naturally above a teak console or a rattan bench.

Yes. The piece pairs with the current tropical modern style now common in Southeast Asian condominiums: pale teak, woven textures, plaster walls, and a single landmark image on the wall.

A single Large covers most consoles. Above a standard sofa we recommend a four-tile Mural; above a long sectional, a nine-tile Mural anchors the wall.

Yes, in Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both resist scratches and the humidity of Singapore weather, and either works for a backsplash or a shower wall.

A soft microfibre cloth with water lifts dust and fingerprints. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners; the colour lives in the ceramic surface, not on top of it.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is made in our studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. There is no licensing and no third-party catalog behind the work.
