a note from the studio

A green volcanic island roughly 1,200 miles off the southwest African coast, with one small port town set into a steep cleft of brown rock. The harbour at Jamestown is a single street climbing between two cliffs, and a long stone staircase, Jacob's Ladder, runs straight up the hill behind it. The famous tortoise on the lawn of Plantation House is older than the camera. From the studio.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Saint Helena

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Saint Helena is a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, about 1,200 miles west of Angola and 2,500 miles east of Brazil. The island is volcanic, roughly 47 square miles, with a population near 4,400. The capital, Jamestown, sits in a narrow valley on the leeward coast. The interior climbs to Diana's Peak at 818 metres. Until Saint Helena Airport opened for commercial flights in October 2017, the only public access was by the Royal Mail Ship that ran from Cape Town.

the year

Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to Saint Helena in October 1815 after Waterloo and died at Longwood House on 5 May 1821. His body was returned to Paris in 1840, but Longwood and the original tomb in Sane Valley are still maintained as French national domains on the island. Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise estimated to have arrived around 1882, lives on the lawn of Plantation House, the governor's residence, and is widely cited as the oldest living land animal.

the visit

Jamestown runs up a single ravine; Jacob's Ladder, a straight stone staircase of 699 steps, climbs from the town floor to the old fortifications on Ladder Hill. The new airport sits on the windward side of the island at Prosperous Bay Plain and receives a weekly flight from Johannesburg via Windhoek, plus occasional Cape Town service. The interior is reached by a single ribbon of road that crosses the island's high spine through cloud forest at Diana's Peak National Park.

By a weekly commercial flight from Johannesburg via Windhoek into Saint Helena Airport at Prosperous Bay Plain. The route opened in October 2017, replacing the Royal Mail Ship from Cape Town.

It is the island where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled from 1815 until his death at Longwood House in 1821. The house and original tomb remain French national domains on the island.

A straight stone staircase of 699 steps climbing from the floor of Jamestown to the old fortifications on Ladder Hill. It dates to 1829, originally built as an inclined plane for moving cargo.

A Seychelles giant tortoise living on the lawn of Plantation House, the governor's residence. He is estimated to have arrived in 1882 and is widely cited as the oldest known living land animal.

It is a British Overseas Territory, not part of the United Kingdom itself. Residents are British Overseas Territories citizens and the territory shares the monarch as head of state.

about the piece in your home

It has been a meaningful gift for Saints living abroad and for families with old shipping or Royal Navy ties. A Small or Medium with a handwritten note from the studio carries well.

The island palette of brown volcanic rock and Atlantic blue sits well with Coastal-modern, English Country, and Maritime Library rooms. The composition holds its own against deep navy or warm oak panelling.

Yes. The piece reads as a quiet map-room object rather than a bright travel poster, so a Medium or Large above a desk or among shelves of books sits naturally.

Above a console, a single Large. Above a standard three-seat sofa, a 4-tile Mural or a 9-tile Mural gives the artwork the breadth the open ocean asks for.

Yes, in Dura Satin or Matte. Both finishes are scratch-resistant and made for vertical installation on backsplashes, shower walls, and powder-room features.

A soft microfibre cloth and warm water. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, beneath a thin glossy finish, so it will not lift or fade with normal cleaning.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original studio work, hand-finished in Knoxville, Tennessee. We do not license outside images.
