a note from the studio

A coastal city at the head of the Surigao Strait, where the Pacific meets the Mindanao Sea and the ferries leave for Siargao. The wharf moves before dawn — outrigger bancas, hot bread, the day's catch laid on banana leaves. Inland, the lowland breaks into karst hills and small white-sand coves. The Mabua pebbles roll under each wave with a sound the locals can identify from the road. Most travellers are here for a night, on the way somewhere else. — from the studio

Surigao City, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Surigao City

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Surigao City is the capital of Surigao del Norte and the northernmost city of mainland Mindanao, situated on the Surigao Strait that separates the island from the Dinagat group to the north. It is the administrative and commercial seat of the Caraga region and the principal ferry port for Siargao Island, an hour and a half across the strait by fastcraft. The city covers roughly 245 square kilometres of coastal lowland and karst hills. Its 2020 population was about 171,000. Tagalog, Cebuano and Surigaonon are all spoken on the wharves.

the water

The Surigao Strait is the eastern entrance to the Philippine archipelago, deep and tide-driven. In October 1944 it was the site of the last battleship engagement in naval history. The water today carries the small daily traffic of fishing bancas and the inter-island ferries. Mabua Pebble Beach, eight kilometres north of the city centre, is a long curve of rounded grey stones that rattle audibly as the waves draw back. Day Asan, a stilt-village in the mangroves on the city's southern edge, is reached by paddle banca through narrow channels.

the visit

Surigao is reached by daily flights from Cebu and Manila to Sayak Airport on Siargao or directly to Surigao Airport; the ferry from Surigao port to Dapa, Siargao runs several times daily and takes about two hours. The city's dry months are March through May; the typhoon season runs June through November and the strait can close ferry service for days at a time. The Bonok-Bonok Maradjao Karadjao festival, held every September, is the city's largest cultural gathering, drawing performers from across Caraga.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Surigao City — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Surigao City is on the northeast tip of mainland Mindanao, capital of Surigao del Norte province in the Caraga region. It faces the Surigao Strait, with the Dinagat Islands to the north and Siargao Island about 60 km to the east.

Yes. Surigao port runs daily ferries to Dapa on Siargao Island, a crossing of about two hours by fastcraft. Most surfers heading to Cloud 9 pass through Surigao either by ferry or by connecting flight at Sayak.

Mabua Pebble Beach is a long curve of smooth grey stones about eight kilometres north of the city centre. The pebbles, rolled by wave action over decades, rattle audibly as the tide draws back. It is a local picnic spot rather than a swimming beach.

Surigaonon is the local language, closely related to Cebuano and Boholano. Cebuano, Tagalog and English are also widely spoken. Surigaonon is the working language of the wharves and the older neighbourhoods around the city centre.

March through May is the dry season, with calm seas and reliable ferry service to Siargao. Typhoon season runs June through November and can close the strait for days at a time. September brings the Bonok-Bonok festival, the city's largest cultural gathering.

about the piece in your home

Yes. Surigao is the gateway city most Siargao travellers pass through, and locals carry strong pride in the strait and the karst coast. A Small or Medium with a studio note carries that recognition cleanly.

The artwork's tropical greens and stained-glass blues sit well in coastal-modern rooms, biophilic interiors with rattan and abaca, and warm minimalist spaces with pale wood. It also lifts a neutral palette where one piece carries the colour.

Yes. The current coastal-modern direction favours specific places over generic seascapes, and a named-port tile reads with intent. The stained-glass treatment also fits the broader jewel-tone direction of recent island-inspired interiors.

Over a console, a single Large carries the wall. Over a sofa, step up to a 4-tile Mural or a 9-tile Mural for proportional weight. The Mural's grid suits the stained-glass treatment of the artwork.

Yes, with the Dura Satin or Matte finish, which are scratch-resistant and built for steam and splash. Glossy is best kept to drier rooms or framed wall pieces. All three finishes are wipe-clean.

A soft microfibre cloth and plain water handle everyday dust. For coastal humidity or kitchen splash, a damp cloth with a drop of mild dish soap. Avoid abrasive pads and bleach-based sprays, which can dull the surface.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original to our family studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. We do not license images in or out. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure.
