— — the city the clouds keep.
“A hill town above Kuala Lumpur, an hour up by road or twenty minutes by the Awana cable car. The air drops ten degrees on the way up. The lights of the resort burn through the cloud most nights, and the casino floor never knows what time it is. People come for the cool, for the rides, for one room above the weather.
Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

Genting Highlands sits at about 1,800 metres in the Titiwangsa range, in the Malaysian state of Pahang, roughly fifty kilometres northeast of Kuala Lumpur. The hill station was opened in 1971 by Lim Goh Tong, who routed the access road and built the first hotel near the summit. The resort complex, Resorts World Genting, holds Malaysia's only land-based casino, the Genting SkyWorlds theme park, and a string of hotels. The Awana SkyWay gondola climbs from the lower town to the resort plateau in about twenty minutes.
The climb is what people come for. Kuala Lumpur sits near sea level and runs hot and humid most of the year; Genting averages around 18 to 22 degrees Celsius, with mist that closes in by mid-afternoon and stays through the night. The cloud layer often parks at the resort level, so the upper hotel floors look down on a white plain with the city's heat well below. Rain is frequent. A jacket that would feel absurd in Bukit Bintang is the right one to bring up the hill.
Most visitors arrive from Kuala Lumpur. The drive up takes about an hour via the Karak Highway and the Genting access road, which climbs in steep switchbacks; coach services run from KL Sentral and Pudu Sentral throughout the day. The Awana SkyWay cable car connects the lower mid-station to the resort plateau and runs late into the evening. The Genting SkyWorlds theme park reopened in 2022 after a long redesign. The casino at Resorts World is the only land-based casino in Malaysia and is restricted to non-Muslim adults.
