Sanrio Puroland

— the indoor theatre where Hello Kitty lives.

Where it lives

Not only on a wall.

A small tile on the nightstand catching the morning. A larger one above the fire. Yours, wherever you spend the slow hours.
On the nightstand, a 6-inch on a walnut stand
Among the books, a 6-inch leaning into the spines
Beside the kettle, a 12-inch propped
Down a quiet hall, an 18-inch floating off the wall
Above the fire, the 24-inch in a walnut surround
a note from the studio

The indoor theme park opened by Sanrio in December 1990, in Tama New Town at the western edge of greater Tokyo. Four floors of stages, parades, a boat ride through the Sanrio world, and the Hello Kitty house on the top floor. Weather makes no difference here. The line for the photo at the door does.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Sanrio Puroland

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Sanrio Puroland is an indoor theme park operated by Sanrio Entertainment in the Tama district of Tokyo, about 30 minutes from Shinjuku on the Keio Sagamihara and Odakyu Tama lines to Tama Center station. It opened on 7 December 1990 and is built around a central atrium across roughly four floors. The park hosts about two million visitors a year. Beyond Hello Kitty, the in-house cast includes Cinnamoroll, My Melody, Kuromi, Pompompurin, and Pochacco, each anchored to their own house, ride, or stage within the building.

the year

The park follows a clear annual rhythm. New Year brings fukubukuro lucky bags and a winter parade; spring opens the strawberry and sakura-themed menus; summer is dominated by the Puroland Summer Festival and water-themed stage runs; autumn brings the Halloween Party with a Kuromi-led dark parade; and from mid-November the building turns over to Christmas-season evening shows. Major show titles run for one to three years before refresh. The largest single attraction since 2018 has been the Miracle Gift Parade in the central atrium, staged twice daily for crowds that fill the surrounding tiers.

the visit

The park is open most days from 09:30 or 10:00 to 17:00 or 18:00, with occasional late evenings during peak seasons. A standard adult Passport runs about ¥4,900 on weekdays and ¥5,900 on weekends and holidays, with a child ticket roughly half that. The optional Discovery Pass adds priority access to popular shows. Tama Center station is a ten-minute walk from the entrance; the path is signed, lined with character statues, and busiest between 10:30 and 12:00. The whole park is indoor, climate-controlled, and accessible by escalator and lift to every floor.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Sanrio Puroland — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

The park is in Tama New Town, in the city of Tama on the western side of greater Tokyo. Tama Center is the nearest station, served by the Keio Sagamihara, Odakyu Tama, and Tama monorail lines, about 30 minutes from Shinjuku.

Sanrio Puroland opened on 7 December 1990 as the company's flagship indoor theme park. A sister outdoor park, Harmonyland, opened in Oita Prefecture the following year and remains in operation.

Hello Kitty is the anchor, but the park casts the wider Sanrio family, including Cinnamoroll, My Melody, Kuromi, Pompompurin, and Pochacco. Each has their own dedicated space, stage rotation, or photo opportunity inside the building.

Yes. The entire park is indoor and climate-controlled across four floors built around a central atrium stage. The only outdoor element is the entrance plaza. Visits are unaffected by weather, which is a major draw in rainy and hot seasons.

A standard adult Passport runs about ¥4,900 on weekdays and ¥5,900 on weekends and holidays, with reduced prices for children and seniors. The optional Discovery Pass adds priority access to the most popular shows.

about the piece in your home

Yes. For Sanrio fans and former visitors, the piece reads as a quiet, grown-up nod to a place they already love. A Keepsake or a Small sits well on a desk; a Medium suits a hallway wall.

The artwork's pink, lavender, and warm white palette suit Soft Kawaii, Pastel Maximalist, and Modern-girlish interiors. It also lands in playrooms, children's rooms, and studios with a deliberate playful palette.

Yes. Pastel and Soft Kawaii interior styling has held steadily since the early 2020s, particularly among adult Sanrio collectors and across the wider Japanese pop-culture interiors category.

Above a sofa in a playful room, a single Large or a four-tile Mural carries well. Above a console or a child's dresser, a Medium centred a hand-width above the surface holds the proportion.

Yes, in Dura Satin or Matte. Both finishes resist steam, splash, and scratch, and suit the soft pastel palette in a powder room or a child's bathroom particularly well.

A soft microfibre cloth, lightly damp with water, is enough. No solvents, no abrasive pads. The colour lives in the surface and does not lift with normal cleaning.
