a note from the studio

A round dome of a mountain that lifts cleanly out of the Jezreel Valley, with nothing in the foreground to compete with it. The summit holds the Franciscan Church of the Transfiguration, finished in 1924 by Antonio Barluzzi, and a smaller Greek Orthodox church beside it. Pilgrims have been climbing the path since the fourth century, and the road that winds up the eastern side is still a switchback you take in second gear. From the top the valley opens north toward the Sea of Galilee and west toward Mount Carmel. from the studio

about Mount Tabor

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Mount Tabor rises about 575 metres above sea level on the eastern edge of the Jezreel Valley in Lower Galilee, roughly 17 kilometres west of the Sea of Galilee. Its near-symmetrical dome stands isolated from the surrounding plain, which is why it has anchored the regional skyline since antiquity. The mountain is named in Joshua 19 and Judges 4, where Deborah and Barak mustered their forces against Sisera, and Christian tradition since the fourth century has identified it as the site of the Transfiguration of Jesus.

the stone

The summit holds the Franciscan Church of the Transfiguration, completed in 1924 by the Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi on the footprint of a twelfth-century Crusader basilica and a fourth-century Byzantine church before it. Two side chapels honour Moses and Elijah. A smaller Greek Orthodox church dedicated to the prophet Elijah stands a short walk away, finished in 1911. Excavations have also uncovered a Crusader-era Benedictine monastery and the remains of a Mamluk-period fortress along the summit ridge.

the visit

The summit is reached from the village of Daburiyya by a narrow switchback road that climbs the eastern face; tour buses transfer pilgrims to shuttle taxis at the lower car park because the hairpins are too tight for full-size coaches. The walking path used by pilgrims since the Byzantine era still climbs from the same village. The Franciscan church is generally open from morning until late afternoon, with a midday break. The Feast of the Transfiguration is observed each year on 6 August.

A few questions we get about Mount Tabor — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Mount Tabor is in Lower Galilee, on the eastern edge of the Jezreel Valley, roughly 17 kilometres west of the Sea of Galilee and 16 kilometres east of Nazareth.

The summit stands about 575 metres above sea level. Because the mountain rises in isolation from a low plain, its visual prominence is greater than the elevation alone suggests.

Christian tradition since the fourth century has identified Mount Tabor as the site of the Transfiguration of Jesus, recorded in Matthew 17, Mark 9, and Luke 9. The feast is observed on 6 August.

The Franciscan Church of the Transfiguration, completed in 1924 by Antonio Barluzzi, and a smaller Greek Orthodox church dedicated to the prophet Elijah, finished in 1911. Both stand on the summit ridge.

Yes. It appears in Joshua 19 as a tribal boundary and in Judges 4 and 5, where Deborah and Barak mustered Israelite forces against Sisera. Psalm 89 also names it alongside Hermon.

A narrow switchback road climbs the eastern face from the village of Daburiyya. Large buses stop at a lower car park and pilgrims transfer to shuttle taxis for the final ascent, or walk the Byzantine-era path.

about the piece in your home

It has been a meaningful gift for customers with pilgrimage ties to Galilee or a devotion to the Transfiguration. A Medium with a handwritten note from the studio carries well.

The earth-and-stone palette reads well in warm Mediterranean, traditional, and quiet contemporary rooms. It also sits comfortably in a study or prayer corner with walnut, linen, and brass.

The piece reads as quiet Mediterranean-traditional, a calm alternative to busier devotional art. It pairs with stone, olive wood, and unbleached linen, and reads at home in chapel-adjacent interiors.

Above a standard sofa, a single Large or a four-tile Mural holds the wall. Above a console table, a Medium or a horizontal four-tile Mural reads in proportion. For a feature wall, the nine-tile Mural is the answer.

Yes. Order the Dura Satin or Matte finish for any room with moisture or splash. Both are scratch-resistant and built for vertical installation behind a stove or in a shower surround.

A soft microfibre cloth and water. The colour is infused into the ceramic surface beneath a thin glossy finish, so it will not lift with normal cleaning. Skip abrasive pads and harsh solvents.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original to our studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. There is no licensing, no stock imagery, and no second source. Reid Wender curates each place that enters the atlas.
