Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga

— where Shravan walks a hundred kilometres in saffron.

Where it lives

Not only on a wall.

A small tile on the nightstand catching the morning. A larger one above the fire. Yours, wherever you spend the slow hours.
On the nightstand, a 6-inch on a walnut stand
Among the books, a 6-inch leaning into the spines
Beside the kettle, a 12-inch propped
Down a quiet hall, an 18-inch floating off the wall
Above the fire, the 24-inch in a walnut surround
a note from the studio

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, set in the temple town of Deoghar in Jharkhand. Through the month of Shravan, in July and August, Kanwariyas walk roughly 108 kilometres barefoot from Sultanganj on the Ganges, carrying river water in matching pots to pour over the lingam. The temple itself is small. The pilgrimage around it is among the largest annual religious gatherings on earth.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Baba Baidyanath Dham stands in the centre of Deoghar, a town in the Santhal Parganas division of Jharkhand in eastern India. The temple complex holds the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva, one of twelve such shrines listed in the Shiva Purana. The main spire rises about 22 metres above the courtyard and is topped by an octagonal lotus crown of gold. The Parli Vaijnath temple in Maharashtra is also identified by some traditions as the same Jyotirlinga; both sites carry the lineage.

the year

The Shravan Mela, the temple's defining cycle, runs through the lunar month of Shravan from roughly mid-July to mid-August. Kanwariyas, pilgrims dressed in saffron, collect water from the Ganges at Sultanganj in Bihar and walk the 108 kilometres south to Deoghar to pour it over the lingam. Estimated counts in recent years have crossed five million pilgrims across the month. Mahashivaratri, in late winter, brings a second smaller wave. The rest of the year the courtyard is quiet.

the visit

The temple sits in central Deoghar and is open to all Hindu pilgrims; non-Hindus may visit the outer courtyard. Entry to the main sanctum is free, with paid expedited darshan available outside the Shravan period. The nearest railway station is Baidyanath Dham, with through trains from Kolkata, Patna, and Howrah. Deoghar Airport, opened in 2022, takes flights from Delhi and Kolkata. During Shravan the entire town is given over to pilgrim traffic and ordinary tourism pauses.

A few questions we get about Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

In the centre of Deoghar town, in the Santhal Parganas division of Jharkhand in eastern India. The nearest railway station, Baidyanath Dham, has direct trains from Kolkata, Patna, and Howrah.

A shrine where Shiva is venerated as a column of light. The Shiva Purana lists twelve Jyotirlingas across India; Vaidyanath at Deoghar is one of them, with Somnath, Mahakaleshwar, and Kashi Vishwanath among the others.

The annual pilgrimage held through the lunar month of Shravan, roughly mid-July to mid-August. Saffron-clad pilgrims walk 108 kilometres from Sultanganj to Deoghar carrying Ganges water to pour over the lingam.

The temple is open to all Hindu pilgrims. Non-Hindu visitors may enter the outer courtyard but the inner sanctum is restricted. Entry is free; expedited darshan tickets are sold outside the Shravan period.

Yes. Some traditions identify Parli Vaijnath in Maharashtra as the same Jyotirlinga; others hold Baidyanath Dham at Deoghar. Both sites are recognised as pilgrimage centres and the lineage is shared between them.

The main spire above the sanctum rises roughly 22 metres above the courtyard floor and is topped by an octagonal lotus crown of gold called the Panchashula, mounted with eight tridents.

about the piece in your home

It carries well for both. The artwork keys on the gold-crowned spire and the saffron of the Shravan crowd, recognisable to anyone whose family has walked the Kanwar route. A Medium suits a home shrine wall.

The saffron, deep red, and gold sit well in Maximalist, South-Asian Traditional, and warm Eclectic rooms. Brass and dark wood furniture echo the temple; white walls let the gold spire read.

A single Large reads across a standard sofa. A 4-tile Mural matches a wider wall; a 9-tile Mural anchors a stair landing or a long entry where the spire wants room to rise.

Yes. In the Dura Satin or Matte finish the tile handles incense smoke, diya warmth, and kitchen steam without trouble. The Glossy finish reads best in framed wall settings away from daily heat.

A soft microfibre cloth with water. No cleansers, no abrasives. The colour lives in the ceramic surface beneath a thin finish, so dust and lamp soot wipe off without affecting the painting.

Yes. Every WenderVista painting is original to the studio, drawn in our stained-glass and alcohol-ink visual language by Reid Wender. Nothing is licensed in or resold from another source.
