A temple on a ridge of seven peaks in the Western Ghats, about 60 km north of Nashik. Saptashrungi Devi is one of the Shakti Peethas — Maharashtra's largest active pilgrimage to the goddess. The road climbs through teak and bamboo to the village at Nanduri; from there a long flight of steps, or now a funicular, lifts pilgrims to the shrine cut into the cliff. from the studio

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Saptashrungi

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Saptashrungi sits at roughly 1,230 metres in the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats, in Nashik district of Maharashtra, India. The name combines sapta, seven, and shringa, peaks: the temple of Saptashrungi Devi is cut into the cliff face of a seven-peaked ridge. It lies about 60 km north of Nashik and 18 km from the highway town of Vani. The site is counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas of Hindu tradition — the points where parts of Sati are said to have fallen — and is one of the three-and-a-half Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra.

the stone

The shrine is rock-cut. The image of Saptashrungi Devi — eighteen-armed and roughly eight feet tall — is carved directly into the cliff face rather than installed as a moveable idol, and is one of the few Shakti images of this scale in India. A flight of 510 stone steps rises from Nanduri village to the shrine; since 2018 a funicular railway, built by Suyog Funicular, has carried pilgrims the final ascent in about five minutes. Markandeya Hill stands across the gorge, named for the sage said to have composed the Durga Saptashati within sight of the goddess.

the year

Two festivals draw the largest crowds. Chaitra Utsav, in the Hindu month of Chaitra in March or April, culminates on Chaitra Purnima and pulls several hundred thousand pilgrims to the ridge over a week. Navaratri in September or October runs nine nights with the climax on Vijayadashami; the funicular runs continuously and the village of Nanduri fills with stalls. The south-west monsoon, June to September, brings around two metres of rain and frequent cloud — the road becomes hazardous and many pilgrims wait until October. December and January are the clearest months.

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Saptashrungi — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Saptashrungi is in Nashik district of Maharashtra, India, on a ridge in the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats. It sits about 60 km north of Nashik city and 18 km from the town of Vani.

The name combines the Sanskrit sapta, meaning seven, and shringa, meaning peaks or horns. The temple stands on a ridge of seven peaks, and the goddess is named for the ridge itself.

Yes. Saptashrungi is counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas of Hindu tradition and is one of the three-and-a-half Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra, with Mahalaxmi at Kolhapur, Tuljabhavani at Tuljapur, and Renuka at Mahur.

Roads climb from Nashik through Vani to Nanduri village at the base of the steps. From Nanduri, a flight of 510 stone steps rises to the shrine; since 2018 a funicular railway covers the final ascent in five minutes.

The two largest are Chaitra Utsav in March or April and Navaratri across nine nights in September or October. Both pull several hundred thousand pilgrims. Chaitra Purnima is the climactic day.

October through February brings the clearest weather and most comfortable temperatures. The monsoon from June to September brings around two metres of rain and frequent cloud, and the ridge road can become hazardous.

about the piece in your home

It has been a meaningful gift for customers with ties to the Devi. The seven-peaked ridge and the rock-cut shrine read as home to anyone who has walked the steps. A Small or Keepsake suits a puja shelf.

The deep monsoon greens and saffron suit Indian-modern, biophilic, and jewel-tone interiors. The colour reads strongly against an indigo or terracotta wall and softens against pale lime plaster typical of older Maharashtrian homes.

A single Large reads well above a console. Above a sofa, a 4-tile Mural fills the wall comfortably and a 9-tile Mural becomes the room's centrepiece. Mockups for each layout are on the listing.

Yes. Order the Dura Satin or Matte finish for any wet or splash-prone wall — backsplash, shower surround, puja niche. The colour lives in the surface and will not lift with humidity or incense smoke.

A microfibre cloth and plain water. Stubborn marks come off with a drop of mild soap. Skip abrasive pads and solvents — the surface is durable, but ammonia and bleach can dull the finish over time.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original to the studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. Reid Wender is the curator. The work is hand-finished in-house and is not licensed from any third party.
