Bhilwara

— a city the looms taught to keep time.

Where it lives

Not only on a wall.

A small tile on the nightstand catching the morning. A larger one above the fire. Yours, wherever you spend the slow hours.
On the nightstand, a 6-inch on a walnut stand
Among the books, a 6-inch leaning into the spines
Beside the kettle, a 12-inch propped
Down a quiet hall, an 18-inch floating off the wall
Above the fire, the 24-inch in a walnut surround
a note from the studio

Bhilwara built its name on cloth. The mills hum from before dawn, and the synthetic suiting that lines half of India's tailor shops is woven here. The town sits in the southern Mewar plain, about an hour north of Chittorgarh's fort and west of the Banas River. The temples on the western edge are quiet. The work is loud. Both are old.

Bhilwara, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Bhilwara

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Bhilwara is a city and district headquarters in southern Rajasthan, about 250 kilometres south of Jaipur and 50 kilometres north of Chittorgarh along National Highway 79. The city sits in the Mewar plain at roughly 421 metres elevation, on the right bank of the Kothari, a tributary of the Banas. The 2011 census recorded a city population of about 360,000 within a district of roughly 2.4 million people. The Banas basin drains east toward the Chambal and ultimately the Yamuna.

— informed by Wikipedia — Bhilwara
the year

Bhilwara is India's largest centre for synthetic suiting and shirting fabric, with more than 800 weaving and processing units concentrated in and around the city. The local trade association registers more than three hundred fabric mills, and the industry runs in three shifts, six days a week. Polyester-viscose blends woven here clothe a large share of the country's office and uniform market. The multi-day Diwali shutdown in October or November is the only sustained pause in the working calendar.

the visit

Bhilwara sits on the New Delhi to Mumbai broad-gauge rail line and is served by daily trains from Jaipur, Ajmer, and Udaipur. The nearest commercial airport is Udaipur's Maharana Pratap, about 160 kilometres south. Most visitors come for textile trade rather than tourism; working hotels cluster along RC Vyas Colony and the city bypass. Harni Mahadev temple, six kilometres west, is the most-visited religious site, and the fortress town of Chittorgarh lies an hour south on National Highway 79.

about the piece in your home

For a customer with family in the textile trade or roots in southern Rajasthan, a Small or Medium with a handwritten note from the studio reads as recognition rather than tourism.

The Mewar palette of indigo, brass, and ochre settles into warm Indian-modern interiors, Rajasthan-inflected studies, and jewel-tone maximalist living rooms.

Yes. The piece reads as part of the current global-craft and modern-Indian movement that pairs handloom textiles and brass with contemporary furniture.

A single Large for a console, a four-tile Mural above a long sofa, and a nine-tile Mural where the room can hold the full Mewar plain across one wall.

Yes, with the Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both are scratch-resistant and made for vertical installation in showers, backsplashes, and high-humidity rooms.

A soft microfibre cloth and clean water. No solvents, no abrasive pads. The colour lives in the surface, beneath the finish.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is drawn in the studio's stained-glass and alcohol-ink visual language by Reid Wender and finished in-house. Nothing is licensed.
