a note from the studio

A limestone massif in central Greece, rising above Delphi and the Pleistos valley. The Greeks gave it to Apollo and the Muses, and the name has carried into every European language as a word for the seat of poetry. In winter the upper slopes hold snow and the small ski centre opens; the rest of the year the mountain is a long pale ridge above the olive country. — from the studio

about Mount Parnassus

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Mount Parnassus is a limestone massif in central Greece, peaking at Liakoura at 2,457 metres. It rises between the regions of Phocis and Boeotia, with the ancient site of Delphi on its southwestern flank. The mountain is the centrepiece of Parnassos National Park, established in 1938 — one of the first national parks in Greece. The slopes hold groves of Greek fir (Abies cephalonica), wild herbs, and the karst springs that fed the Castalian fountain at Delphi. The nearest town of any size is Arachova, on the southern shoulder.

the stone

The massif is composed of Mesozoic limestone, weathered into long pale ridges and karst hollows that hold snow late into spring. The same limestone formed the rock terrace at Delphi, where the Temple of Apollo was built in the 4th century BC on the site of earlier sanctuaries. The Castalian Spring still runs at the foot of the Phaedriades, the two cliffs that close the sanctuary on the east. From the village of Arachova at 940 metres, the stone reads warm at sunset.

the visit

Most visitors reach the mountain from Delphi, about 180 kilometres northwest of Athens by road. The archaeological site and museum are open year round; standard admission is set by the Greek Ministry of Culture and runs higher in the summer season. The Parnassos Ski Centre, on the northeastern flank near Kelaria and Fterolakka, operates roughly December through April and is the largest ski area in Greece. Arachova, ten kilometres east of Delphi, holds the main winter lodging.

about the place

Mount Parnassus rises in central Greece, in the regions of Phocis and Boeotia, about 180 kilometres northwest of Athens. The ancient sanctuary of Delphi sits on its southwestern flank.

The highest peak, Liakoura, reaches 2,457 metres (8,061 feet). It is one of the highest mountains in central Greece and holds snow on the upper slopes through much of the winter.

In Greek myth the mountain was sacred to Apollo and to the nine Muses. Its name became a literary shorthand for the seat of poetry, carried into many European languages.

Yes. The Parnassos Ski Centre, on the northeastern flank, is the largest ski resort in Greece. It typically operates from December through April depending on snowfall.

Parnassos National Park, established in 1938, covers much of the upper massif. It protects forests of Greek fir, karst springs, and a range of wild herbs and birds of prey.

Arachova, at about 940 metres on the southern shoulder, is the main mountain town. Delphi village sits eight kilometres to the southwest, next to the archaeological site.

about the piece in your home

Yes. Parnassus carries the weight of Delphi and the Muses, and the tile reads as a quiet recognition of that lineage. A Medium with a studio note suits a reader's home.

The pale stone and Aegean light suit Mediterranean-modern, warm Minimalist, and quiet Classical rooms. It also sits well against limewashed walls, terracotta, and aged brass.

Yes. Warm Minimalism leans on stone, lime, and earth tones, and a Greek mountain in pale limestone fits the palette. The Medium or Large holds the wall.

Above a standard sofa, a single Large reads beautifully. Above a long console or for a wall feature, a 4-tile Mural is the next step; a 9-tile Mural anchors a full wall.

Yes. For damp or splash-prone rooms, choose the Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both are scratch-resistant and hold up to humidity. The Glossy finish is best in dry display rooms.

A soft microfibre cloth with plain water is enough for routine cleaning. For occasional spots, a drop of mild dish soap on a damp cloth. No abrasive pads, no harsh cleaners.
