a note from the studio

Inland Rhodes. A small village under the flight path of Diagoras, with a stone-paved plateia, a few cafés around the church, and olive groves running off to the hills. Most visitors to Rhodes stay on the coast and never come this far in. The square is quiet by late afternoon, when the heat falls back and old men begin a slow round of backgammon. from the studio

the place

Maritsa is an inland village on the island of Rhodes in the southeastern Aegean, set on a low plateau about 15 kilometres south of Rhodes Town and four kilometres east of Diagoras International Airport. The village is part of the South Aegean region and the Rhodes regional unit. Its population is around 1,400, settled around a central square, an Orthodox church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, and the surrounding olive and citrus groves of the Maritsa valley.

the silence

Inland Rhodes runs at a different speed from the coast. Maritsa keeps the rhythm of a working agricultural village — kafenia open early, the square filling in the evening, the church bell at six. The valley has been settled since antiquity, and Mycenaean tombs were excavated in the area in the early twentieth century. Coach traffic to Lindos and Faliraki passes well to the south; the road through the village is mostly local, walked more often than driven.

the visit

Maritsa sits within easy reach of the island's two main centres. Rhodes Town and its medieval walled city lie 15 kilometres north; Lindos and its acropolis are 35 kilometres south. The village makes a short detour for travellers moving between them, with a few tavernas around the plateia serving local wine and slow-roasted lamb. Spring, when the orange blossom is heavy, and early autumn are the best windows. Summer heat in the interior can exceed 35°C in July and August.

about the place

Maritsa is an inland village on the Greek island of Rhodes, about 15 kilometres south of Rhodes Town and four kilometres east of Diagoras International Airport. It sits in the South Aegean region.

The population is around 1,400. The settlement is built around a central plateia, the Orthodox church of Saint Nicholas, and the orchards and olive groves of the Maritsa valley behind it.

The South Aegean region and the Rhodes regional unit. Administratively, Maritsa is part of the Municipality of Rhodes, formed in the 2011 Kallikratis local-government reform.

A few tavernas and kafenia around the plateia, the Church of Saint Nicholas, and walking routes through the olive groves and citrus orchards of the valley. The pace is local, not touristic.

By car from Rhodes Town in about twenty minutes via the airport road. A regional bus service also runs from Rhodes Town. Most coach tours bypass the village for the coastal resorts.

about the piece in your home

Yes. Maritsa carries the inland-Rhodes feeling that families know from summers with grandparents. A Medium or Small with a handwritten note from the studio carries well as a host gift or a kitchen wall.

Mediterranean-modern interiors, Minimalist Greek, and warm Coastal-modern rooms. The whitewash, terracotta, and olive-leaf palette in the tile sits naturally beside reclaimed wood, plaster walls, and natural linen.

A single Large fits a standard sofa wall. A Medium reads well above a console or sideboard. For a kitchen or a generous entryway, a 4-tile Mural opens the space.

Yes, in Dura Satin or Matte. Both finishes resist humidity and scratches, which suits a backsplash above a stove, a shower surround, or a small powder room.

A soft microfibre cloth with plain water. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, so it stays in the surface and will not wear off with ordinary cleaning.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is curated by Reid Wender and produced by our single studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. No licensing, no stock imagery, no third-party prints.
