a note from the studio

A river city of red roofs and dark spires that came through the twentieth century with its bones intact. The Vltava bends through the centre. On the west bank a hill carries the castle and the long cathedral. The Charles Bridge crosses east into the Old Town and its astronomical clock, which has been keeping the same hour since 1410. Trams rattle over the cobbles after dark. From the studio.

Prague, on ceramic.

Each tile is finished by hand in our Knoxville studio. Artwork is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, and rests beneath a thin glossy finish. The colour lives in the surface, not on top of it.

about Prague

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, set on the Vltava River in the Bohemian basin in the western half of the country. The city has roughly 1.3 million residents. The Vltava bends through the centre, separating the castle district of Hradčany on the west bank from the Old Town and New Town on the east. The historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 and is one of the largest preserved medieval cores in Europe.

Prague Castle, founded in the 9th century, is the largest ancient castle complex in the world by area, covering about 70,000 square metres. Within it, St. Vitus Cathedral was begun in 1344 and completed only in 1929. The Charles Bridge, started in 1357 under Charles IV, crosses the Vltava on sixteen stone arches and remained the city's only river crossing until 1841. Its baroque statues were added between 1683 and 1714.

the visit

The Old Town Square holds the Astronomical Clock on the south wall of the Old Town Hall, installed in 1410 and the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world still in operation. From the square it is a short walk west across the Charles Bridge and up the lanes of Malá Strana to the castle gates. Trams 22 and 23 climb to the castle from the river for travellers not wanting the steep walk.

about the place

On the Vltava River in the Bohemian basin in the western half of the Czech Republic. It is the country's capital and largest city, with around 1.3 million residents.

The historic centre survived both world wars largely intact. Its medieval and baroque core has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 and is one of the largest preserved medieval city centres in Europe.

Construction began in 1357 under Charles IV and finished in the early 15th century. It crosses the Vltava on sixteen arches and was the city's only river crossing until 1841.

Roughly 70,000 square metres, making it the largest ancient castle complex in the world by area. It was founded in the 9th century and holds St. Vitus Cathedral, the royal palace and the Golden Lane.

It was installed on the Old Town Hall in 1410, making it the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still in operation.

May and September into early October give the gentlest light and the smallest crowds. December has the Old Town Square Christmas market but cold, often grey afternoons.

about the piece in your home

It has been a meaningful gift for customers with Czech heritage and for travellers whose first European city was Prague. A Small or Medium with a handwritten note from the studio carries well.

The red-roof and slate-spire palette suits Old World European, Library, and Storybook rooms. It also holds against a clean white wall in a Modern European setting that wants one warm anchor.

Yes. The medieval-skyline composition reads as a quiet map-room object rather than a bright travel poster. A Medium above a desk or among shelves of books sits naturally.

Above a console, a single Large. Above a standard three-seat sofa, a 4-tile Mural or a 9-tile Mural gives the long row of red roofs the horizontal breadth it asks for.

Yes, in Dura Satin or Matte. Both finishes are scratch-resistant and made for vertical installation on backsplashes, shower walls, and powder-room features.

A soft microfibre cloth and warm water. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, beneath a thin glossy finish, so it will not lift with normal cleaning.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original studio work, hand-finished in Knoxville, Tennessee. We do not license outside images.
