a note from the studio

Hengdian is a small town in Zhejiang that became China's film capital almost by accident. A businessman built a Qin palace there in 1996 for one historical epic, then kept building. The backlot now covers more than 300 hectares and holds full-scale replicas of the Forbidden City, a Song-era street, a Ming-Qing market town, and a Hong Kong block from the 1930s. Twenty thousand actors live in town. On most days, several productions are shooting at once.

about Hengdian World Studios

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Hengdian World Studios sits in Hengdian town within the city of Dongyang, Zhejiang Province, about 300 kilometres southwest of Shanghai. The complex was founded in 1996 by the businessman Xu Wenrong, originally to build a Qin dynasty palace for Xie Jin's film The Opium War. It has grown into the largest film studio in the world by area, with reported figures around 330 hectares and more than 30 themed shooting bases. The studios are run by the Hengdian Group, which began as a township enterprise in the 1970s.

the stone

The major sets are built to scale and to last. The Ming-Qing Palace base reproduces much of Beijing's Forbidden City in concrete and timber across about 100,000 square metres. The Qingming Riverside reproduces the eleventh-century Bianjing street scene from Zhang Zeduan's scroll. The Hong Kong street recreates the 1930s waterfront for republican-era dramas. The Tang and Song palaces, the Qin-Han imperial palace, and a Zen temple complex all stand permanently. None of these are scaled-down park attractions — they are working sets that double as a theme park between productions.

the visit

Hengdian draws roughly 15 million visitors a year, second only to a handful of national parks in China. Tickets are sold individually for each base or as multi-day combination passes; the major palaces and the Qingming Riverside are the most visited. Guests can sometimes watch filming from the edges. The nearest airport is Yiwu, about 50 kilometres away; the Hengdian high-speed rail station opened in 2023, putting the town under three hours from Shanghai Hongqiao. Most accommodation clusters around the studios and the central park.

A few questions we get about Hengdian World Studios — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Hengdian is a town in the city of Dongyang in Zhejiang Province, about 300 kilometres southwest of Shanghai. The studio complex is on the western edge of town.

With more than 330 hectares of permanent sets and dozens of productions shooting concurrently, Hengdian is the largest film studio in the world by area and the centre of China's historical-drama industry.

The Hengdian Group, founded by Xu Wenrong, began the studio in 1996 with a Qin dynasty palace built for the film The Opium War. The company has expanded the backlot continuously since then.

Mostly Chinese historical dramas and wuxia films, ranging from the Qin and Han through the Tang, Song, Ming, Qing, and republican periods. Hundreds of films and television series shoot here each year.

Often, yes. Tourists buying tickets to the major bases can sometimes watch productions at work from designated viewing areas. Some of the sets also operate as costumed theme park attractions when no filming is scheduled.

about the piece in your home

Yes. Hengdian is the working home of the genre — directors, art departments, and stunt teams know it the way Hollywood knows the studio lots. A Small or Medium reads well in an office.

The red lacquer, gold roof tiles, and shadowed grey courtyard tones suit Asian-modern, Maximalist, and Jewel-tone interiors. The piece pairs well with black-stained wood, brass, and silk textiles.

Yes. The palette runs through the deep reds and warm metallics currently driving Asian-modern and the broader Maximalist revival. The composition has enough graphic structure to anchor a wall of plainer pieces.

A Large reads well above a console. Above a standard sofa, a 4-tile Mural carries the wall; a 9-tile Mural is right for a longer sectional or an open dining room.

Yes. Order the Dura Satin or Matte finish for walls exposed to splashes or steam. Both resist scratching and clean with a damp microfibre cloth.

A soft microfibre cloth with plain water. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners. The colour lives in the ceramic surface and will not fade with normal washing.
