a note from the studio

A long sand island off the northeast coast of Belize. The reef runs parallel about half a mile offshore, which is what makes the water inside it that flat pale colour. San Pedro Town holds most of the people; the rest is mangrove, palm, and the lagoon on the leeward side. Golf carts, not cars. The wind off the Caribbean carries the sound of the surf hitting the reef from a long way out. from the studio

about Ambergris Caye

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize, about 40 kilometres long and rarely more than 1.5 kilometres wide, lying off the northeast coast of the Belize District. Its eastern shore sits within a few hundred metres of the Belize Barrier Reef, the longest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The island's only town, San Pedro, holds most of the population of roughly 20,000. The caye is reached by short flights from Belize City or by water taxi across about 56 kilometres of the Caribbean.

the water

The water on the lee side of the reef is shallow, clear, and the pale green-blue colour of fine sand seen through warm seawater. Most of the depth is under 5 metres for several hundred metres out. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve, established in 1987 at the southern tip of the caye, holds a 75-metre cut through the reef where nurse sharks, rays, and large groupers gather. Visibility on a clear day runs 20 to 30 metres. Boats from San Pedro reach the reserve in about 15 minutes.

the visit

Most visitors fly into San Pedro from Belize City on a 15-minute hop with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air, or take the roughly 90-minute water taxi from Belize City. There are no rental cars on the caye; transport is by golf cart, bicycle, or boat. The dry season runs from late November through April, with the most stable diving and snorkelling conditions in March and April. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk in September and October.

common questions

What people ask.

A few questions we get about Ambergris Caye — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Ambergris Caye lies off the northeast coast of Belize, in the Caribbean Sea, just inside the Belize Barrier Reef. It is reached by short flight or water taxi from Belize City, about 56 kilometres west.

The caye is about 40 kilometres long and rarely more than 1.5 kilometres wide, making it the largest island in Belize. Its population, concentrated in San Pedro Town, is roughly 20,000.

San Pedro Town, on the southern half of the island, is the only town and the centre of life on the caye. Transport on the island is by golf cart, bicycle, or boat — there are no rental cars.

Hol Chan, established in 1987, is a marine reserve at the southern tip of Ambergris Caye. It centres on a 75-metre natural cut through the reef where nurse sharks, rays, and groupers gather.

The dry season runs from late November through April, with the most stable conditions for diving and snorkelling in March and April. Hurricane risk peaks in September and October.

The Belize Barrier Reef along its eastern shore was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It is the longest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere.

about the piece in your home

Yes. Ambergris Caye and San Pedro hold a long place in the hearts of returning travellers and the expat community. A Small or Medium with a handwritten studio note carries well.

Coastal-modern interiors, warm minimalist rooms with rattan and linen, and Caribbean-influenced spaces with whitewashed wood. The piece sits well against pale wall colours and natural fibres.

It fits both — the coastal-modern direction toward soft turquoise and sand, and the broader biophilic move toward sea and sky as everyday companions in the home.

Above a console, a single Large is the natural fit. Above a sofa, step up to a four-tile Mural. For a long living-room wall, the nine-tile Mural carries the horizon at full reach.

Yes, in our Dura Satin or Matte finish. Both are scratch-resistant and built for humid vertical installations, including kitchens, bathrooms, and beach-house outdoor showers.

A microfibre cloth and water. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, beneath a thin glossy finish, so salt air and cleaning do not lift it.

Yes. Every WenderVista piece is original to our studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. We do not license outside artwork; the eye is Reid Wender's.
