a note from the studio

The capital of South Australia, set on the Adelaide Plains between the Mount Lofty Ranges and Gulf St Vincent. The city was laid out in 1836 by Colonel William Light on a grid ringed by parklands. The Torrens River runs east-west through the centre. The wine country of the Barossa, McLaren Vale, and the Adelaide Hills sits within an hour's drive, and the light here is dry and Mediterranean.

about Adelaide

The place, in three passes.

A little of what's known, in case you fall down the rabbit hole — or want to go see it yourself.
the place

Adelaide is the capital of South Australia, set on the Adelaide Plains between the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east and the long curve of Gulf St Vincent to the west. Founded in 1836 and laid out by Surveyor-General Colonel William Light, the city centre is built on a grid of five squares ringed by a continuous belt of parklands, a plan known as Light's Vision. The metropolitan population is about 1.4 million. The climate is Mediterranean: hot dry summers, mild wet winters, and a long shoulder of warm autumn weather.

the year

Adelaide is sometimes called the festival city. The Adelaide Festival and the Adelaide Fringe both run through March; the Fringe, founded in 1960, is now the largest open-access arts festival in the southern hemisphere, with more than 7,000 artists across roughly a month. WOMADelaide brings world music to Botanic Park in early March. The city's Central Market in Grote Street, trading since 1869, is one of the largest covered fresh-produce markets in the southern hemisphere, and the calendar of the wine country in the Barossa runs steadily alongside.

the visit

The city is reached through Adelaide Airport, 6 kilometres west of the centre, with bus connections running into the city grid in about 20 minutes. The five squares (Victoria, Light, Hindmarsh, Hurtle, and Whitmore) sit within a 25-minute walk of one another, and the parklands ring is continuous around the perimeter. The wine districts of the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and the Adelaide Hills lie within an hour by road. March, the festival month, is the busiest; April and May carry the warm autumn light without the heat.

A few questions we get about Adelaide — and about bringing the piece home.
about the place

Adelaide is the capital of South Australia, set on the Adelaide Plains between the Mount Lofty Ranges and Gulf St Vincent. The metropolitan area holds about 1.4 million people.

The grid plan was laid out in 1836 by Colonel William Light, Surveyor-General of the colony of South Australia. It is built on five squares ringed by a continuous belt of parklands, known as Light's Vision.

Adelaide hosts the Adelaide Festival and the Adelaide Fringe each March. The Fringe, founded in 1960, is now the largest open-access arts festival in the southern hemisphere, with more than 7,000 artists across roughly a month.

The Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and the Adelaide Hills all sit within an hour by road. Together they produce a large share of Australia's premium Shiraz, Grenache, and cool-climate Chardonnay.

March for the festivals, April and May for warm dry autumn light without the summer heat. The climate is Mediterranean: hot dry summers, mild wet winters, and the wine country runs into June.

about the piece in your home

It has been a thoughtful gift for customers with family in Adelaide or anywhere in South Australia. The parklands ring and the gulf light carry the city's Mediterranean character. A Small with a handwritten studio note travels well.

The piece reads well in Coastal-modern, Mediterranean, and Australian-modern rooms, anywhere warm earth tones meet dry gulf light. It also pairs cleanly with a Mid-century or Wine-country interior.

A single Large reads cleanly above most consoles; above a full sofa, a 4-tile Mural carries the field, and a 9-tile Mural lets the parklands ring and the gulf horizon breathe at room scale.

Yes. For wet rooms and splash zones we recommend the Dura Satin or Matte finish, soft sheen or no sheen, both scratch-resistant. The Glossy finish suits framed wall pieces in dry rooms.

A soft microfibre cloth with water is enough. The colour is slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, beneath a thin glossy finish, so the image will not lift or fade with cleaning.

Yes. Every WenderVista tile is original studio work by Reid Wender, the curator. There is no licensing and no third-party imagery. The atlas is built one place at a time, slowly.
